In this space, I’m going to help you identify potential impact additions in fantasy baseball leagues. I’ll make an effort to tailor this column to all league sizes, recommending players that could be available in shallow, deeper, and AL- or NL-only formats.
The time to grind is now. If you are in striking distance in your fantasy league, you must keep your foot on the gas pedal over the final seven weeks of the season. While others may have turned their attention to fantasy football, there are plenty of points to be gained in the standings.
If you’ve been paying attention and following along here, we have had a ton of success in this space. More recently with Dylan Crews socking his first dinger of the season on Wednesday evening against Carlos Rodon and the Yankees.
Impact Fantasy Addition: Keider Montero
We’re going to stick with what’s working here and ride the hottest team in Major League Baseball. The Tigers have won six straight games and 13 of their last 16 and will look to complete a sweep of the Angels on Thursday afternoon as they battle Jack Kochanowicz and his 6.08 ERA.
Keider Montero looks to be in a terrific spot to earn a victory in that one, and if you look at how he has pitched over his last four starts, there are actually legitimate reasons to like him in this spot – other than the fact that he gets to face the Angels’ lineup.
Since August 6, Montero has gone at least five innings in each of his four starts and has compiled a 3.00 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and a 19/9 K/BB over his 21 innings of work. He should be good for five punchouts, solid ratios, and a very strong shot at a victory on Thursday afternoon which makes him a tremendous streaming option in all formats.
Impact Fantasy Addition: Andrew Vaughn
When most fantasy managers think about places to look for production in their fantasy leagues, the White Sox aren’t typically a team that comes to mind. Finally, though, Andrew Vaughn is showing signs of delivering on the promise that he has teased for years.
Since August 4, the 26-year-old slugger is slashing an impressive .333/.375/.528 with a pair of homers and 11 RBI over 19 games – and that doesn’t include what should have been a walk-off three-run homer on Wednesday that Rangers’ outfielder Travis Jankowski absolutely robbed in the ninth inning.
The counting stats are going to continue to be limited by his surrounding cast, but first base and especially corner infield have been tough spots to fill all season long in deeper leagues. Vaughn hits in the middle of the White Sox’ lineup on a nightly basis and should deliver quality power production over the final four and a half weeks of the season.
He’s currently rostered in just 28 percent of all Yahoo leagues and makes for a worthwhile addition.
