In this space I’m going to help you to identify potential impact additions in fantasy baseball leagues. I’ll make an effort to tailor this column to all league sizes, recommending players that could be available in shallow, deeper and AL- or NL-only formats.
The time to grind is now. If you are in striking distance in your fantasy league, you must keep your foot on the gas pedal over the final seven weeks of the season. While others may have turned their attention to fantasy football, there are plenty of points to be gained in the standings.
We have already featured Bryan Sammons, who is going to go out and dominate in a victory over the Cubs on Tuesday evening and Matthew Boyd who should punch out 5+ batters in his start against the Yankees. That doesn’t mean we don’t have fresh impact additions to recommend for Tuesday though.
Fantasy Impact Addition: Connor Norby
Norby was the prized acquisition in the Marlins’ deadline deal that sent Trevor Rogers to the Orioles. Fantasy managers were thrilled when they heard that he had been traded – finally clearing the runway for him to see everyday action at the big-league level. That excitement quickly dissipated as Norby was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville.
The time is now though. The 24-year-old infielder was recalled prior to Monday’s series opener against the Diamondbacks and he should be a fixture in the Marlins’ lineup for the final six weeks of the regular season. He even singled, drove in a run, scored a run and was caught stealing in his debut with the Fish on Monday evening.
While Norby has struggled in his limited MLB action thus far, he was slashing .293/.382/.496 with 17 homers, 60 RBI, 13 stolen bases and a 123/53 K/BB over 440 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. He’s got that highly coveted blend of power and speed that makes fantasy managers swoon and he should find himself in a nice spot in the Marlins’ lineup (he hit sixth on Monday.
Norby already has second base eligibility in most fantasy formats and he should soon gain eligibility at third base as well, as that’s where he figures to see the bulk of his playing time from here on out. While he isn’t going to single-handedly win you any fantasy leagues, he should contribute across the board while qualifying at both corner and middle infield. That makes him a useful piece in deeper formats — especially for a player that is rostered in just four percent of all Yahoo leagues. https://gty.im/2167541268
Fantasy Impact Addition: Cody Bradford
https://gty.im/2167436231
Given the success that Cody Bradford has had this season, sandwiched around stints on the injured list, it’s absolutely shocking to me to see him rostered in only 31 percent of all Yahoo leagues.
The 26-year-old southpaw sports a stellar 3.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 33/6 K/BB across 36 innings through his first seven appearances (six starts) on the 2024 season. He hasn’t shown any signs of rust since returning from the injured list, registering a 3.68 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and a 14/3 K/BB over 14 2/3 frames. Looks like pretty much the same guy to me.
He also draws a nice matchup on Tuesday evening, getting to do battle against the Pirates (Mitch Keller) at home. At an absolute minimum, he makes for a strong streaming option in all formats on Tuesday and there’s really no reason to think that he can’t be viable for the remainder of the season – unless of course he gets bumped from the rotation following the eventual returns of Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom.
Regardless, pick him up and start him on Tuesday, and keep him rostered for next week’s dream matchup against the White Sox in Chicago. If he gets bumped after that, you still got to enjoy two strong starts for virtually no cost.
