Braves vs Phillies Fantasy Start/Sit 8-22-24

braves phillies

The Braves and Phillies face off in a rubber match for the series finale tonight. Each team has faced the most difficult pitching matchups they will face in the series which is evident by the low score in the first two games. This game may be high-scoring relative to the first two as the pitchers going tonight are not front-line starters. This is good news if you roster any of the sluggers for each team as so far in the series it’s been the unsung heroes getting the job done.

Braves vs Phillies Fantasy Starts

Marcell Ozuna, DH, Atlanta Braves

The big bear continues his hot streak at the plate in this series going 2-7 with a home run. Ozuna only has one hitless game in the past two weeks and is slashing .327/.424/.542 against lefties this season and he has a .476 AVG in the past week. Ozuna should continue to stay hot as the Braves continue their playoff push.

Weston Wilson, OF, Philadelphia Phillies

The 29-year-old rookie has had a good season despite not getting consistent playing time. Wilson became the first Phillies rookie to hit for the cycle in their win over the nationals on 8-16-24. Weston is hitting .341 with 3 home runs and 7 RBI this season and is 2-3 in his only game so far in this series.

Wilson is only batting .227 against righties but has the highest average of all the outfield options for the Phillies. While the Phillies do use a platoon for the outfield it would be hard to see them not riding the hot hand in Wilson, keep an eye out for the lineup announcement but if they start Wilson you should follow suit.

Ramon Laureano, OF, Atlanta Braves

Laureano is batting .304 in 56 games in the last month and .333 in the last 15 days with 4 home runs.

The numbers indicate that Laureano is starting to come around and has been hitting over .300 consistently recently. While Laureano is only 2-7 in this series so far, that has been against two of the best pitchers in baseball, so this next matchup against Philly looks much better for Laureano. He is batting .274 against lefties and should continue to keep a solid average for the Braves.

Braves vs Phillies Fantasy Sits

Matt Olson,1B, Atlanta Braves

Olson continues to struggle at the plate this season after a record-setting 2023 season. While Olson has proven he can hit a home run on any given day, his inconsistent performance doesn’t inspire any confidence in starting him. He is only batting .190 in the past week with one home run and he is 0-7 in this series against the Phillies. While his average against lefties is better than righties, odds are you could find a better option to fill your first base slot until Olson proves he can hit with any consistency.

Nick Castellanos, OF, Philadelphia Phillies

Castellanos is having an inconsistent year at the plate but continues to be one of the few everyday players for Philly. He was on a hot streak coming into the series batting .295 in the last month but since getting to Atlanta has gone 1-7 with an RBI. Castellanos is only batting .240 against right-handed pitchers with 76 strikeouts which doesn’t make this matchup look like the ideal spot for him to get hot.

Braves vs Phillies Pitching Matchup

Spencer Schwellenbach RHP (4-6, 4.04 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 85 Ks, 75.2 IP) vs Christopher Sanchez LHP (9-8, 3.46 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 108 Ks, 140.1 IP)

Schwellenbach has been a savior for the Braves this year with all their pitching injuries and has been able to eat some innings while keeping the Braves in most of the games he has started. You can pencil Schwellenbach in for 5-7 innings in most starts while only allowing minimum runs.

The last time he faced the Phillies on 7-6-24 he went 6 innings only allowing one run and 6 Ks. The Philly sluggers have been cold in this series which could bode well for the young righty but he could be in for a long night if he isn’t feeling his pitches.

Christopher Sanchez has been inconsistent all year, supported by his mediocre record. He hasn’t faced the Braves this year but faced them twice last September pitching a total of 11.1 innings, allowing 7 earned runs, and striking out 12 while taking the loss in both games. This game will be an interesting pitching matchup as two starters without much experience facing the other team take the mound.
