Baseball season is almost back! Pitchers and catchers are close to reporting, but for many people, the more exciting thing is fantasy baseball is back. While second basemen aren’t always the source of stats in the lineup, getting one of the best can vault your lineup to the top of the league. Let’s round out the top ten for 2024.
Fantasy Baseball: Top-10 Second Basemen and Projections (6-10)
Nico Hoerner (Chicago Cubs)
Hoerner had the most stolen bases of anyone in the top ten in 2023. In fantasy baseball, you often need to diversify the stats players can receive. Hoerner will fill the stat sheet. He is a hitting machine who keeps his strikeouts low. You won’t get much power from him, but you can fill that in other positions. In terms of fielding, he won the Gold Glove at second base last season. If you need runs and hits in fantasy baseball, Hoerner is a great choice.
2024 Projections per FantasyPros:
BA.282, OBP .332, SLG.395, OPS.787, 10 HR, 64 RBI, 83 R, 165 H, 28 2B, 4 3B, 45 BB, 107 K, 34 SB
Gleyber Torres (New York Yankees)
Torres had a great season despite Aaron Judge missing a large chunk of it. The knock on Torres for the longest time was his strikeout rate, but he improved on that. It has dropped over the years from 22.6 percent to 14.6. Because of this, every other stat went up. If Judge is healthier this season, Torres could become a huge steal in fantasy baseball.
2024 Projections per FantasyPros:
BA.269, OBP .338, SLG.453, OPS.791, 24 HR, 80 RBI, 83 R, 151 H, 27 2B, 1 3B, 58 BB, 109 K, 13 SB
Ha-Seong Kim (San Diego Padres)
Kim has one of the most coveted things in fantasy baseball: positional flexibility. He can play anywhere in the infield besides first base, giving your lineup options. What surprised many managers last year was the increase in stolen bases. He ranked fifth in the National League with 38 after only having 12 in 2022. His growth from 2022 to 2023 makes him a great pickup in your fantasy baseball draft.
2024 Projections per FantasyPros:
BA.246, OBP .324, SLG.386, OPS.710, 15 HR, 61 RBI, 76 R, 133 H, 26 2B, 2 3B, 62 BB, 118 K, 26 SB
Ketel Marte (Arizona Diamondbacks)
Marte is the vanilla ice cream of second basemen in fantasy baseball. If I am going to an ice cream shop and there are other choices, I’m leaving vanilla alone. However, if vanilla is the only option, I will be very happy. If Marte is your second baseman in 2024, you will be very happy. He has shown consistency over the years and has a lot of young talent around him. While I wouldn’t reach for Marte, he is a player you can plug in and watch the stats roll in.
2024 Projections per FantasyPros:
BA.274, OBP .348, SLG.463, OPS.811, 21 HR, 80 RBI, 87 R, 154 H, 34 2B, 5 3B, 64 BB, 107 K, 6 SB
Bryson Stott (Philadelphia Phillies)
Stott is a tough player to evaluate for fantasy baseball. He took a huge leap in 2023 but went undrafted during this time last year. Likely, someone in your league picked him up off waivers and reaped the benefits. Picking Stott is a gamble. Will he keep the numbers he had in 2023, or will we see a drop-off?
2024 Projections per FantasyPros:
BA.266, OBP .321, SLG.400, OPS.721, 14 HR, 66 RBI, 79 R, 149 H, 30 2B, 3 3B, 46 BB, 108 K, 22 SB
