Tight End Week 3 Waiver Wire Pickups

After a tough Week 1 at the tight end position, with only 5 tight ends exceeding more than 10 fantasy points, Week 2 was a definite improvement. 8 players had at least 10 fantasy points and 11 players had at least 9 fantasy points. This is the streakiest of any of the positions and the inconsistency of the position has already shown in the first two weeks. With that being said, it makes the Tuesday waiver wire even more important.

Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith

Even though Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa looks to be out for the next couple of weeks with a concussion, the new tight end for the team seems to have found his confidence in the offense. On Thursday night’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, Smith tied the team lead with 6 targets and was second on the team with 6 catches for 53 yards.

From a fantasy perspective, it probably makes it nervous to pick up a player who will be getting the ball thrown to him by a backup quarterback. But, the best friend of backup quarterbacks are the easy completions which are checkdowns to running backs and tight ends. Thursday’s performance shouldn’t be a fluke for one of the most underrated tight ends in football.

Washington Commanders TE Zach Ertz

While Ertz is clearly on the back end of his career and not in his prime, that doesn’t mean Ertz isn’t still a viable fantasy option. In the Week 2 victory over the New York Giants, Ertz led the team with 62 yards and was second with 4 catches. Like it’s an advantage to pick up a tight end with a backup quarterback, that sentiment is the same for a rookie quarterback.

Second overall pick Jayden Daniels has shown the mixed bag that all of the rookie quarterbacks have been so far but a reliable veteran tight end has given Daniels confidence. The trustworthiness of Ertz has been on full display so far, making him a great waiver wire pickup.

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Brenton Strange

The Penn State tight end is the backup on the Jacksonville Jaguars, but with starter Evan Engram getting injured in warmups in Week 2, he did not play against the Cleveland Browns. Strange became a starting tight end for the Jaguars and he tied the team lead with 3 targets and led the team with 65 yards.

With Engram suffering a hamstring injury, most teams don’t like forcing players to play through that type of injury. The Jaguars play the Buffalo Bills on Monday night in a game and with Engram most likely out, Strange should get more volume next week with an expanded role.
