This is the start of the weekly series on Total Apex Fantasy Sports where we look at the NFL slate of games to see what quarterbacks are the start/sit for that week. As we get ready to start a brand new NFL season, with the probability of twists and turns along the way, it is important to sift through the fluff and get the right information each week; this is the place to be.
Quarterback Must Starts Week 1
Jalen Hurts ($7,300 DraftKings, 8,900 FanDuel)
Jalen Hurts is the first start of Week 1 as the Eagles travel down to Brazil to face the Green Bay Packers on Friday Night. That game is going to be two high-powered offenses scoring a lot of huge points back and forth throughout that game for the Brazil crowd.
Jalen averaged 21.46 fantasy points per game last season on FanDuel and 22.4 fantasy points on Draft Kings. DraftKings has the Packers as the 15th-rated defense heading into this season, meanwhile, Fanduel has the Packers ranked 22nd against quarterbacks. Look for Jalen to bounce back from the Wild Card game disaster right away on Friday Night.
Patrick Mahomes ($6,900 DraftKings, $8,700 Fanduel)
This one is a risky start, because both Fanduel and Draft Kings have Baltimore as a Top 3 defense this season as they should be, but it’s Patrick Mahomes, with new weapons like Xavier Worthy and a more consistent Rashee Rice around him. Patrick averages 18.67 fantasy points on Fanduel and averages 19.6 on DraftKings. This will still be a solid play in daily fantasy because the Chiefs are going to showcase that new passing attack effectively on Thursday evening.
Josh Allen ($8,000 Draft Kings, $9,200 Fanduel)
Josh Allen will have a new set of receivers around him in 2024 except for Khalil Shakir and Dalton Kincaid, so that will be an interesting start for Week 1 to see if the receivers will have enough chemistry with Allen. Allen averaged 26.0 FPPG on DraftKings and DraftKings has this matchup against Arizona as one of the easiest matchups of the week. On Fanduel Allen averaged 24.99 FPPG. Allen will be a great play in DFS This Sunday.
Quarterback Must SITS WEEK 1
On the flip side of things, here are a few of the players we are sitting in this one.
Lamar Jackson ($8,600 Fanduel, $7,800 Fanduel)
Last year’s AFC Championship showed why Lamar Jackson is a sit this week. The Chiefs will be prepared to take away his running ability and make him the passer and the Chiefs still have a good secondary even with the loss of L’Jarius Sneed. Lamar did have good FPPG averages last season at 23.1 on DraftKings and 21.85 on Fanduel, but the eye test on what this matchup was last year will be enough evidence to sit the reigning NFL MVP.
Dak Prescott ($7,100 DraftKings, $7,800 Fanduel)
Dak Prescott is a sit due to a combination of things, First, the Cleveland Browns defense is one of the best defensive units in the game of football right now if not the best unit. Second is how in shape Dak’s number one target, Ceedee Lamb is heading into this game after holding out for his extension. Dak averaged 22.5 FPPG on DraftKings last season and is normally a great DFS player when he’s in the lineup. But Dallas’s offense isn’t going to be efficient in Week 1 against DraftKings’ 4th-ranked defense against QBs.
Deshaun Watson ($6,000 DraftKings, $7,100 Fanduel)
Cleveland fans, Deshaun Watson is also a sit because of Dallas’s defense. Dallas will go after Watson a lot in this game and the potential for turnovers will be high with the daunted secondary led by the returning Trevon Diggs and the pass rush led by Micah Parsons.
Quarterback Lock of Week 1
Josh Allen ($8,000 Draft Kings, $9,200 Fanduel)
Allen averaged around 25-26 FPPG on both apps and the matchup is an easy one for the No.1 Fantasy Option in a lot of formats making Allen the easy lock of the week. Yes, the offense is new around him but Josh Allen should and will torch this Arizona Defense in Week 1 with his mobility and arm talent alone.
Quarterback Fade of Week 1
Both Quarterbacks in Dallas at Cleveland
Both Deshaun Watson and Dak Prescott are my fades of the week, unfortunately. This game shouldn’t be the game you try and use your quarterback spot on in Week 1 because the defenses on both sides likely going to force some turnovers in the game. Deshaun would be the more major fade of the two guys, but stay away from this game in general for the QB spot. Use your money on the defenses first and foremost.
Quarterback Sleeper of Week 1
Kyler Murray ($6,400 DraftKings, $7,900 Fanduel)
My sleeper of the week is Kyler Murray. Murray does have a tough matchup against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 as both Fanduel and DraftKings have Buffalo’s defense on the higher scale of toughest matchups for the week. But Kyler did have some strong performances late last season when he returned from the ACL injury. He has a new WR1 in rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. and the price on DraftKings of $6,400 is a great price for one of the underrated options in fantasy football in 2024.
Final Thoughts
Week 1 for DFS is normally one of the toughest weeks to predict because the teams are all brand new and it is mostly based on speculation a lot of the time. But if you use these lists that we’re putting out on Total Apex Fantasy in 2024 this week, you’ll have the guidance to make smart decisions with your budgets and make some cash. There were so many options to choose from in Week 1 in terms of the QBs but these are the choices that analytical feel right to call and make some money.
