In this space I’m going to help you to identify potential impact additions in fantasy baseball leagues. I’ll make an effort to tailor this column to all league sizes, recommending players that could be available in shallow, deeper and AL- or NL-only formats.
The time to grind is now. If you are in striking distance in your fantasy league, you must keep your foot on the gas pedal over the final seven weeks of the season. While others may have turned their attention to fantasy football, there are plenty of points to be gained in the standings.
Impact Fantasy Addition: Davis Martin
For my deep leaguers, if you’re looking for a strong streaming option on Monday’s slate of MLB action, look no further than White Sox’ right-hander Davis Martin.
An afterthought in all fantasy formats – rostered in only two percent of all Yahoo leagues and five percent of NFBC Main Event leagues – Martin just may have some appeal in a strong matchup against the Tigers on Monday.
Over his last three starts, dating back to August 7, Martin has registered a 1.69 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 14/6 K/BB ratio over his 16 innings of work. He’s a good bet for solid ratios and a handful of strikeouts and may even be a sneaky shot at a victory.
While the White Sox are a terrible source of wins for starting pitchers, he gets the benefit of opposing Ty Madden in his MLB debut on Monday. Madden has posted a terrifying 7.97 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 79 innings in 18 starts at Triple-A Toledo this season and should get knocked around by the White Sox’ offense. That means that Martin just needs to keep the train on the tracks for five frames and he’ll have an opportunity to earn a win.
For a player that can be scooped off of waivers or added for $1 FAAB in most leagues, Martin makes for a solid streaming option for Monday.
Impact Fantasy Addition: Matt Wallner

While he’s sufficiently rostered in most deep leagues, I have to ask what’s going on with the disrespect for Matt Wallner in Yahoo leagues? He’s rostered in only 11 percent of leagues. That means he’s available in 89 percent of all leagues. That’s a travesty.
The 26-year-old slugger has done nothing but rake since returning from Triple-A St. Paul on July 7, slashing .313/.429/.687 with eight homers, 21 RBI and three stolen bases in 119 plate appearances over 34 games (27 started).
He hits the ball as consistently hard as any player in the league and has been racking up home runs and RBI in the middle of the Twins’ lineup while hitting for an elite average and chipping in a few stolen bases as well. What else could fantasy managers possibly want out of an outfielder? If he’s available in your league, the time to fix that mistake is right now.
