Johnny Wilson 2024 Fantasy Outlook

The Philadelphia Eagles’ third wide receiver spot is pretty open, so sixth-round rookie Johnny Wilson has a perfect opportunity to seize it. This preseason should be enough of a showcase with that camp battle for a role between Wilson and Parris Campbell. John Ross could get in the mix, along with fifth-round rookie Ainias Smith. But based on training camp so far, it looks like the 6’6″ and 231-pound receiver should win the starting spot.

The redshirt senior from Florida State had a better collegiate season in 2022. Johnny Wilson played two years at Arizona State before transferring and had his best year with the Seminoles. He had 43 receptions and five touchdowns on 897 yards through the air, about 200 yards better than 2023.

The 23-year-old played alongside another transfer and former second-rounder Keon Coleman, now with the Buffalo Bills. Many thought Wilson would convert to tight end in the pros due to his size but the Eagles seem adamant that he gets a shot at receiver first.

After running a 4.52 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine, his rare blend of size and length could give him an advantage on the outside. The real question will be his separation and his inconsistent hands. But with the rave reports from camp, Johnny Wilson could’ve cleaned up his prior concerns.

Wilson 2024 Fantasy Outlook

Playing behind A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith, Johnny Wilson won’t be a viable option early for fantasy. Unless there is an injury, those superstars could make it difficult for the rookie to make a huge impact. However, as a waiver wire pickup down the line, he could be someone to watch.

According to Fantasy Pros, Wilson is the 127th-ranked receiver in PPR and isn’t drafted in most leagues. However, in Dynasty, he could have some value as a stash player unless the Eagles make a move for another receiver. Preseason will dictate what his role will be if he can be their third receiver.

Philadelphia has tight end Dallas Goedert and their new running back Saquon Barkley getting work as a receiver. Coming from quarterback Jalen Hurts in offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s system should produce a top-five offense. Wilson could come into his own later in the season if he starts.

Final Thoughts on Wilson

With more use of motion in the offense, the Eagles could play Johnny Wilson on the outside. This would let Smith and Brown rotate inside depending on the matchup. For a player his size, Wilson is pretty nimble with his route running. His speed isn’t eye-opening but it isn’t bad for his freakish size.

The late-round rookie might not be usable for fantasy early on but he could be a menace in the redzone. That is only if Wilson can win the starting job, as there are plenty of targets to go around in Philadelphia. The Eagles may want someone like Johnny Wilson to develop a bit more in their system.
