Gabe Davis is a human football player from the planet Earth. He has no superpowers of any kind and isn’t that handsome. He is just a typical human being who happened to be average enough at football to be desired. And it makes me a little bit ill.
This offseason, Jacksonville backed up the Brinks truck and gave Davis a 3-year, 39-million-dollar contract. That’s 13 million dollars a year for someone who’s never been all that good. He doesn’t even have a single 1,000-yard season, which you think would be a requirement for that type of money. Yet, somehow, Gabe Davis got paid.
Gabe Davis Isn’t a Stud
Davis started his career in Buffalo as an occasional weapon for Josh Allen. He developed into a starter and had moments where it looked like he would finally break out. But it never really happened. Last season alone, he caught just 45 balls for 746 yards and 7 touchdowns. I’ll admit, it’s not horrible, but he was the definition of boom or bust. It made him a risk to start each week in fantasy football, so owners were better off leaving him on the bench. You just can’t trust him to perform week in and week out.
Now, Davis joins holdover Christian Kirk and their first-round pick, Brian Thomas Jr., in a good but not great wide receiver room. Kirk had 57 grabs for 787 yards last season after topping the thousand-yard mark the year before. He’s incredibly reliable, which is why he’s become Trevor Lawrence’s favorite receiver. Kirk appears to be the top wideout in town, and that shouldn’t change now that the team signed Davis.
Can Gabe Davis Produce Anything?
The good news for Davis? Calvin Ridley and Zay Jones left town in free agency, leaving a combined 100 receptions for 1,337 yards. That’s a substantial amount of production, and now the Jaguars need Davis to step in and step up. But look closer, and Thomas Jr. seems like a bigger threat to replace those stats. During his last season as an LSU Tiger, Thomas had 68 grabs for 1,177 yards and an absurd 17 TDs while catching passes from Jayden Daniels. He’s legit, and that’s why the Jags grabbed him in the 1st round.
But again, what about Gabe Davis? The fact is that Gabe has been a conundrum his whole career. He’ll score 4 touchdowns in a big playoff battle after going catchless the week before. There’s no reason or rhyme to his production. He’s shown that he has the ability, but the question is how much?
Final Thoughts
If you’re thinking about drafting Davis, you better have a strong stomach. He’s an inconsistent player who just can’t be counted on. So, when it comes to fantasy football drafts, let someone else be the one who falls on the Gabe Davis landmine.
