As many of us embark upon Fantasy Football Drafts in the coming weeks, the question of how to address the quarterback position is likely to arise. You can look for risky, high-upside guys if you choose. But you might want to balance that approach with some safe quarterbacks.
The four super-safe quarterbacks on this list might not create a lot of buzz when you select them. But considering they’re all likely available at QB2 prices but have QB1 upside, they’re worth your attention.
Brock Purdy, San Francisco
Purdy is coming off a season where he checked in at QB6 overall, so it’s not like he hasn’t performed at a high level before. Consider now that it was his first full season as a starter. He’ll only get more comfortable with that year of experience behind him. Not to mention the fact that it’s a well-oiled machine of an offense, with Kyle Shanahan just requiring that Purdy put the ball in the hands of his playmakers and let them do the rest.
If your league mates are worried about a potential trade of Brandon Aiyuk, let them worry. That will only drop Purdy’s price and let you take advantage of the bargain. Even though Purdy is ranked QB13 for me, it’s a safe bet he reaches the Top 12. Why? Because others above him with higher upsides might falter, so Purdy should meet his expectations.

Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville
One of the main reasons why the guys in the second tier of quarterbacks are ranked down there is because they won’t give you very much in terms of running ability, which is so important to boosting Fantasy points. Lawrence is the exception. While he’s not in the category of the guys who can go off for 100 yards rushing in any given game, he at least gives you a solid baseline, as his 334 rushing yards a year ago demonstrates.
The key for Lawrence to hit another level this year is to put together a whole season’s worth of solid performances; he’s only been good for about half a season at a time to this point. Yet even with that being the case, he’s still checked in at QB12 and QB13 the past two years, providing a reliable floor.
Jared Goff, Detroit
It’s a little bit funny that Jared Goff doesn’t draw a lot of excitement from people and is typically viewed as a ho-hum option. People forget that this guy was the first overall pick in the NFL Draft once upon a time. He finds himself in an ideal situation with Detroit, with a play-caller in Ben Johnson who plays to his strengths and a team that offers him playmakers galore.
Goff’s numbers are indeed going to drop when he plays away from Detroit (but then again, most quarterbacks have the same problem). Even that will be mitigated this year by the fact that he’ll play most of his road games indoors. Coming of QB14 and QB11 seasons the last two years, he’s a safe quarterback pick for sure.
Kirk Cousins, Atlanta
If there were Safe Quarterbacks for the Fantasy Football Hall of Fame, Cousins would have to go into the inaugural class. For what seems like time immemorial, Fantasy players have been grunting out Cousins’ name in the final rounds of drafts without much excitement. Yet he usually gives them just what they need out of him: excellent passing yardage and passing touchdown numbers.
The move to Atlanta shouldn’t change that, as he goes into an offense that seems similar to the one he enjoyed in Minnesota. He averaged 19.3 Fantasy points per game last year before his injury, and you can expect similar production from the veteran quarterback in his new home.
