If you’re like me, you like to have a third quarterback on your roster for your Superflex teams. I like the idea of having somebody to fill the spot during bye weeks. In addition, it gives me the luxury to play matchups occasionally and switch that third quarterback into the lineup. And if one of my top two guys gets hurt, I’m covered and I won’t have to use up my free agent budget on a backup.
With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of four guys who can fill that QB3 slot on your Superflex roster. They might not have a ton of upside. (Then again, they might.) But they’ll be there when you need to insert them into your lineup in a pinch. Having them will prevent you from putting a position player up against the other guy’s quarterback.
Sam Darnold, Minnesota
With the season-ending injury to J.J. McCarthy, Darnold, a so-called “bridge” quarterback in Minnesota, is now the clear-cut QB1 for the entirety of 2024. Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall are the backups, and neither one looks like they’re posing any threat to Darnold, who played better than you might remember in his most recent stretches of playing time.
A couple of other things in his favor: He’s never had an offensive coach as solid as Kevin O’Connell, and he’s never had a wide receiver as talented as Justin Jefferson at his disposal. The Vikes love to toss it around the yard, and they could be playing from behind a lot this year. Darnold could easily climb into mid-QB2 territory by the end of this season.
Derek Carr, New Orleans
Look, I understand that Carr doesn’t exactly drive the excitement meter through the roof. But what you get from Carr is a floor, one that will prop you up when you have to stick him in the lineup some stray week. And maybe, in his second year in New Orleans, we’ll see him raise his game a little bit with more comfort in the system.
Even if he doesn’t, his baseline is good enough to get you by. The guy has averaged 24 touchdown passes per season in his 10-year career, and it would be shocking if he didn’t land in that territory again in 2024. Carr might lose some touchdowns around the red zone to the Taysom Hill show, but he hardly misses time to injury (a key asset for QB3s in Superflex leagues). I wouldn’t write home about it, but I wouldn’t mind nabbing Carr in a Superflex endgame.
Bryce Young, Carolina

Young’s rookie season was a disaster, there’s just no way around that. It certainly didn’t help that C.J. Stroud, drafted after him, went out and enjoyed one of the finest rookie seasons by a quarterback in history, throwing Young’s year into a harsher light. But we Fantasy Players don’t have to worry about that when we’re drafting him as our Superflex QB3.
Young won’t get benched for Andy Dalton, and he’ll get a fresh start with Dave Canales as head coach. Canales worked wonders last season with Baker Mayfield. In addition, Young has far more weapons this season, and his track record of success in college still should mean something. I still believe he has a good career ahead of him, and it starts this year with an incremental step up from his rookie season.
Bo Nix, Denver
Nix won the job in Denver, and he’s likely a better fit for what Sean Payton wants out of his quarterback than Russell Wilson ever was. It’s no surprise that he won the job, considering the draft capital that Denver used on him. It’s hard to imagine him losing that job unless his play sinks to abysmal levels.
What people don’t realize about Nix is that he offers a low-key rushing floor that none of the other guys on this list do. That will help him sustain decent Fantasy totals even when his passing numbers are up and down. He could be had at the end of a Superflex draft and will give you stability as a QB3.
