In this space I’m going to help you to identify potential impact additions in fantasy baseball leagues. I’ll make an effort to tailor this column to all league sizes, recommending players that could be available in shallow, deeper and AL- or NL-only formats. The time to grind is now. If you are in striking distance in your fantasy league, you must keep your foot on the gas pedal over the final seven weeks of the season.
While others may have turned their attention to fantasy football, there are plenty of points to be gained in the standings. If you’ve been paying attention and following along here, we have had a ton of success in this space and should continue to do so over the final month of the season as we help to lead you to a fantasy championship.
Impact Fantasy Addition: Albert Suarez
The real treat for those streaming starting pitchers on Wednesday has to be Orioles’ right-hander Albert Suarez. Even with a major bump from those looking to stream this particular start, he’s still only rostered in 47 percent of all Yahoo leagues. That’s ludicrous. For starters, he draws the best matchup on the entire board getting to take on the White Sox. We’re not saying that it’s a guaranteed free win these days, but it’s pretty close.
On top of that, Suarez has been absolutely dealing as of late. Since moving back into the rotation on August 6, Suarez has gone 2-0 with a minuscule 1.19 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and a 24/5 K/BB across 30 1/3 frames in his five starts. He checks all the boxes – pitches for a strong offense, taking on a terrible team, strong likelihood of strikeouts and great ratios. There’s absolutely no reason to leave him languishing on your waiver wire and missing out on Wednesday’s gem. Just take a look at what Cade Povich did to the White Sox on Tuesday night. Expect more of the same.
Impact Fantasy Addition: JP Sears
If you’re searching the wire for a streaming option on Wednesday, look no further than JP Sears. The 28-year-old southpaw has been outstanding over his last 10 starts, registering a 3.06 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 55/11 K/BB across 61 2/3 innings of work. He also draws a premium matchup against the weak hitting Mariners on Wednesday, where he should be able to pile up a substantial number of strikeouts.
Not bad for someone that’s still hanging around on the waiver wire in more than 50 percent of all Yahoo leagues. He’ll have to go up against George Kirby, so between that and the A’s lineup backing him, the odds of a win aren’t great, but Sears should generate a handful of strikeouts and provide solid ratios on Wednesday with limited chances of getting blown up.
