- The number one pick overall in the draft this year happens to be a running back, RB Christian McCaffrey, SF 49ners. He 21.2 points a game McCaffrey also rushed 2,000 scrimmage yards and tied for the NFL lead with 21 total touchdowns. He’s the clear RB1 and will be the first player drafted in most leagues.
- Bijan Robinson, Atlanta, is the second ranked RB. He carried the ball 221 times, 1,055 yards, and 7 touchdowns. He averaged around 15 fantasy points a game. Now with Kirk Cousins at QB, Robinson should have a better season.
- Breece Hall, New York Jets, Hall had a brilliant rookie season that was cut short by injury but he did return in 2023. Hall had 1,585 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns. If he remains healthy this season for the New York Jets he can improve his fantasy points for this season
- Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles, Despite missing three games and battling ankle issues for a large part of the season, Barkley still produced 1,242 scrimmage yards and scored 10 touchdowns in a bad New York Giants offense. He now joins the Philadelphia Eagles this season. The Eagles have a high powered offense with QB Jalen Hurts, WR A.J Brown, and WR Devonta Smith.
- Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts, Despite missing the first 4 weeks of the NFL season due to injury he still had a solid season last year. He is still considered a prime RB. He ran for 741 yards, and 8 touchdowns. He’s projected to get over 1,300 yards this season and 10 touchdowns.
However, there are more running backs in the league that are in the top 10 and top 20 that can help any fantasy team this year. Jahmyr Gibbs, Derrick Henry, Travis Etienne Jr. and De’Von Achane. These back are worth even drafting in the later rounds 3-4 if available.
NFL Running Backs to Draft in Later Rounds
- Joe Mixon, (HOU) Mixon has been in the NFL for a long time he’s a vet that can still run and be a nightmare for a defense. He was recently traded to the Houston Texans from the Bengals. It will be great to watch him with QB C.J. Stroud.
- Josh Jacobs, (GB), Jacobs last season played for the Raiders. The Raiders went through some adversity with the firing of Head Coach Josh McDaniels. Jacobs now plays with the Packers since getting traded this offseason. With a new offense in Green Bay, Jacobs should excel.
- Raheem Mostert, (MIA) Mostert is the Dolphins’ primary back, playing 15 games and finishing with 234 touches and almost 1,200 total yards, 18 touchdowns, and 3 receiving touchdowns. Available in the 4th-5th rounds he is a great pick up.
Final Thoughts
These running backs are solid starters for a fantasy football league either in a PPR league or non-PPR. Even these running backs are worth investing in for a dynasty league. These RBs are projected to have a great season this upcoming season on the teams they were either on last year or on a new team this year.
