Blue Jays vs Reds Fantasy Start/Sit 8-20-2024

Fantasy baseball third basemen projections

As the fantasy baseball regular season starts to come to a close, it’s time to monitor call-ups and workload management. Certain teams will be playing for the future, so they will be bringing up younger players. Other teams may be limiting their pitcher’s innings. The Blue Jays and Reds are playing for two different things right now. One is completely out of it, while the other still has an outside shot at the playoffs.

The Toronto Blue Jays have reached the point of the season where they are out of the playoff race. Younger players could be inserted into the lineup and veteran pitchers could be more limited in the coming weeks. For the Cincinnati Reds, they are still battling to get into the wild card discussion in the National League. Losers of three in a row, they will need to get turned around quickly.

Blue Jays vs Reds Fantasy Starts

Vladimir Guerrero Jr, 1B, Toronto Blue Jays

Vlad Jr has been the lone bright spot for the Toronto Blue Jays this season. Not much has gone right north of the border this season, but Guerrero has stayed consistent. In August, he has 21 hits, a .356 batting average, four home runs, and 10 RBI. To illustrate his consistency, in July, he hit .356 with eight home runs, and 20 RBI.

Elly De La Cruz, SS, Cincinnati Reds

One of the most exciting young players in baseball, Elly De La Cruz does it all for Cincinnati. He hits for power and leads MLB in steals by a large margin. He is going through a bit of a cold streak right now, but he’s liable to bust out at any moment. He has some risk due to his strikeout rate, but the rewards far outweigh any risks with him.

Spencer Steer, LF, Cincinnati Reds

Ignore his .233 average. Spencer Steer leads the Reds in RBI with 75, is second with 20 steals and 26 doubles, and is third with 18 home runs. A lower average can be looked over when his potential for big games is so high. In his last six games, Steer has two home runs and six RBI. Fire him up with confidence.

Blue Jays vs Reds Fantasy Sits

George Springer, RF, Toronto Blue Jays

Gone are the days when George Springer was a must start on your fantasy team. His decline in average, power, and speed has been alarming this season. In shallow leagues he may have already been dropped. In his last five games he only has four hits and two RBI. His results so far this season don’t hint at a breakout either.

TJ Friedl, CF, Cincinnati Reds

Friedl hasn’t done nearly the amount of running he did in 2023. He only has six stolen bases this season, which is a stark contrast of his 27 from last year. Granted, he has been in and out of the lineup due to injury. Maybe he can find a spark, but until he does, he should stay on your bench.

Noelvi Marte, 3B, Cincinnati Reds

Marte is going to be good for those of you who have him on your dynasty team. However, he has been atrocious when he’s been in the lineup this season. He’s hitting at a .181 clip and that doesn’t create much hope if you’re fighting for a playoff spot in your leagues.

Blue Jays vs Reds Pitching Matchup

Jose Berrios, RHP (11-9, 3.85 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 116 Ks, 149.2 IP) vs Undecided

Jose Berrios for the Toronto Blue Jays has been solid for a losing team. However, he does not strike out a ton of batters. He does have a propensity of giving up the long ball, with 27 home runs allowed so far this season. Coupled with the fact that Toronto does not score a lot of runs, he doesn’t offer great win upside.

The Reds have not announced a starter yet. Keep an eye out for their announcement, which will likely come tomorrow.
