Tua Tagovailoa will have a lot to prove in the 2024 NFL season, particularly if he is unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension before week one. Should he not come to terms with the Dolphins during the offseason, the reigning passing yards leader will be an unrestricted free agent the following summer.
In his fifth season in the league, Tagovailoa finished as a top-10 fantasy quarterback and will look to build on that production entering his contract year.
Tua Tagovailoa 2023 Stats and Fantasy Production
With a lot on the line in his fourth season as Miami’s starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa delivered, leading the Dolphins to an 11-6 record with a Wild Card playoff berth. Mike McDaniel and Frank Smith made it a point early in the year to emphasize their high-paced and pass-heavy offense, leading to 130 total points through the first three weeks.
Tagovailoa turned heads from the opening week in a duel with fellow 2020 first-round draft pick Justin Herbert, throwing for 466 yards with three touchdowns, accumulating nearly 30 fantasy points.
Per FantasyPros, the lefty ended the year as the ninth-best fantasy quarterback with 284.4 total points.
In his first full season without injury, Tagovailoa finished first overall with 4,624 passing yards and sixth with 29 touchdowns. He would be selected to his first Pro Bowl in February.
Tagovailoa’s production would be instrumental in star receiver and prized offseason acquisition Tyreek Hill finishing first in the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards and tied for first with 13 touchdowns. Hill would also be the second-ranked receiver on the year with 257.4 total fantasy points.
Tua Tagovailoa 2024 Fantasy Outlook
As has been the story of his career thus far, the determining factor regarding Tua Tagovailoa’s fantasy success in 2024 will be his health. Through six years as a starter in both college and the NFL, Tagovailoa has only played two full seasons of football.
Barring the injury concerns and his ongoing contract negotiations, Tagovailoa has all the tools necessary to finish as a top 10 quarterback for a second consecutive season. The Hawaiian took a significant leap in his second year with Tyreek Hill at his disposal and Mike McDaniel calling the shots and has only improved each season under his current head coach.
Entering his age 30 season, a decline is imminent for Hill, whose game relies heavily on explosive speed and athleticism. But to this point, the speedster has shown no signs of slowing down, putting up his fourth straight 1,000-yard season.
On paper, Tagovailoa’s passing yards seem like an anomaly, but there is actually potential for more in 2024. Not only have his numbers increased each year but Tagovailoa has continued to be hampered by sporadic dreadful performances, though the quantity of such outings were limited in 2023.
The 29 touchdowns are also an area of improvement for Tagovailoa, who was on track for a much higher production in that category in 2022. Through 13 games in his third season, the southpaw threw 25 touchdowns, just four less than his career-high mark the following year in four less games.
Regardless of his status with Miami entering a pivotal point in his tenure, 2024 will be a make-or-break season for Tagovailoa, who will be facing an essential crossroad in his career. With another stellar season, he could ascend to superstardom but with a decline in his performance, he may also settle into the fantasy purgatory of mediocracy. Expect the improvement to continue as Tagovailoa establishes himself as a bonafide QB1.
