Then again, this could be a revenge spot for Justin Fields, who played for the Steelers last year and got benched. When the NFL was making the schedule, when Rodgers signed with Pittsburgh, it was pretty obvious that they were going to face the Jets in Week 1.

Defense is the name of the game, and with T.J. Watt back and the Jets’ issues at O-line, they should put a ton of pressure on Justin Fields. In fact, the Steelers’ -9 sack differential was only better than six teams. The Steelers are also 6-2-1 in Week 1 since 2016. Aaron Rodgers returns to Gang Green and will look to rebound after a rough season in 2024.

New York Jets

Their rushing gain was super disappointing last season, with 91.8 rushing yards per game. However, Breece Hall was clearly battling injury. With him healthy, along with Braelon Allen showing potential, they should exploit that Steelers defense with tremendous question marks.

Along with Justin Fields being a more mobile quarterback, he should be a handful for the Steelers’ defense. Along with a healthier Jets defense, their pass rush could be a problem for Pittsburgh’s offense. The Jets are also 2-7 in Week 1 since 2016.

Prediction

This is an easy Steelers bet, and it’s stunning that the spread isn’t higher. The Jets have so many unknowns with the team, including at quarterback. Justin Fields is still a big unknown. The Jets have notable injuries. Alijah Vera-Tucker tore his triceps, and Ahmad “Sauce’ Garder has a fibula injury. Vera Tucker for sure is out, but if Gardner can’t go, that’s a big loss to that Jets defense.

On paper, the Steelers are the better team on the field and on the sidelines with Mike Tomlin. Tomlin also knows Fields’ tendencies, and should schematically structure the defense to shut him down.
