Bijan Robinson was drafted in the 2023 NFL draft 8th overall out of the University of Texas. While it was speculated that Atlanta would go with defensive lineman Jalen Carter if he fell to the Falcons, they instead opted to go with this standout running back.
This came as no surprise as it was clear the Falcons’ strategy was to build around offensive skill positions. This was general manager Terry Fontenot’s third draft with the Falcons and for the third consecutive year, he took an offensive skill player with a top 10 pick.
Rookie Season
Robinson had a somewhat disappointing campaign for Falcons fans and fantasy owners alike. When you spend a top 10 pick on a running back, you expect them to be the lead guy in the backfield. Unfortunately, Arthur Smith was Atlanta’s head coach and offensive play-caller and felt Robinson needed to split carries evenly with second year back Tyler Algier.
Even while splitting carries, Robinson still managed 976 yards and 4 touchdowns on 214 rushing attempts. Robinson also had 58 receptions for 487 yards and another 4 touchdowns through the air. It’s clear to anyone paying attention that with a competent coaching staff, Robinson has a clear path to be a top 5 running back in fantasy football.
Bijan Robinson 2024 Outlook
Much like the rest of the Atlanta Falcons offense, you can’t talk about the upside for this season without mentioning the change in the coaching staff. Bringing in Zac Robinson from the McVay coaching tree to call the offense sends a message to the fanbase that they didn’t just waste four consecutive top 10 picks. While it remains to be seen exactly how they plan to use both running backs in this new offense, Robinson has value as a three-down back as well as a pass catcher out of the backfield. Algier will still have a place in this new offense, but it should be dialed down considerably, allowing Robinson to showcase his talents.
The Falcons offense as a whole is expected to take a giant step forward with the acquisition of veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins. Even with the optimism surrounding Robinson going into this season, it should be noted that Zac Robinson is a first-time offensive coordinator so growing pains should be expected. The fact remains even with an inexperienced play-caller and a new quarterback, Robinson is still one of the few running backs capable of being a workhorse for their team.
Dynasty Outlook Going Forward
It’s hard not to be optimistic about the Falcons offensive players at the moment. Everything looks to be coming up Atlanta with the new coaching hires and free-agent signings. This version of the offensive coaching staff should be in place for a few seasons barring a catastrophic season. While Robinson’s value isn’t at an all-time high right now, it’s likely the highest it will be for a couple of years unless Bijan has an MVP-caliber season in his sophomore year.
If you have Bijan you’re likely excited about the upcoming season and what you’re going to get out of him. If someone in your league is trying to trade for him, the price tag should be high. Robinson is likely going to be a top five running back this season and has his whole career ahead of him. This is exactly the type of running back you want on your dynasty roster for years to come.
Now is not the time to try and get Bijan if he’s not on your roster. For a player like Robinson whom seemingly everyone is high on, your best bet is to hope that the Falcons offense sputters out of the gate and that the person rostering Bijan in your league might be willing to move him at a discounted price.
