The Miami Dolphins selected Virginia wide receiver Malik Washington with their sixth-round pick (184th overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft. At 5’8″ and 191 lbs, Washington’s smaller stature aligns well with coach Mike McDaniel’s offensive scheme.
The Dolphins and Washington have agreed to a four-year contract worth $4,219,560. In his senior year at Virginia, Washington led the nation with 110 receptions and 1,426 receiving yards, setting single-season school records in both categories.
While there were numerous wide receivers available in this year’s draft, Washington was one of the few who caught the critics’ attention. During rookie mini-camp and training camp, he quickly became a favorite among both teammates and fans. His developing chemistry with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was evident throughout camp.
Can Malik Washington make a name for himself in a crowded wide receiver room?
Malik Washington 2024 Preseason Stats
During the preseason, Malik Washington had a limited showing, with just 7 targets resulting in 3 receptions for 7 yards. However, he delivered a standout performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In that game, Washington recorded:
- 1 rush for 40 yards
- 1 reception for 7 yards
- 1 kick return for 45 yards
- 1 punt return for 28 yards
Washington proved to be elusive and difficult to tackle in the open field during this game. Although his overall preseason production was modest, it’s understandable given that the Dolphins wide receiver corps was dealing with significant injuries. The team likely wanted to ensure Washington was among the healthy receivers available for Week 1.
Washington 2024 Fantasy Outlook
Washington will start the NFL season in a competitive wide receiver room. The Miami Dolphins have one of the best-receiving cores in the NFL with superstars like Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Odell Beckham Jr. Plenty of star power, but how’s the depth in Miami? After the big three, the other quality receivers are Braxton Berrios, River Cracraft, and Erik Ezukama.
Malik Washington still has multiple factors in his favor. The Dolphins receiving core has had an injury bug during camp into preseason and some might linger into the start of the 2024 season. OBJ has been on the PUP since the beginning of training camp but is expected to be taken off PUP before the beginning of the season.
River Cracraft has an upper-body injury that will keep him out for some time. Ezukama has dealt with injuries throughout his whole career and expects the same for this season. This is the opportunity for Washington to get some looks early in the season.
