The Philadelphia Phillies have had one of the most consistent starting pitching rotations in baseball. The biggest surprise in a group of established stars has been the emergence of Cristopher Sanchez. Sanchez had started to play better towards the end of the 2023 season but wasn’t a major factor in the postseason for the Phillies. But with his tremendous success, this has allowed the Phillies to have a much deeper rotation and for fantasy owners to get a steal in DFS and in leagues.
The Surprise of the Season
Cristopher Sanchez might be one of the most underrated players in the game of baseball at the moment and fantasy owners who have him definitely understand the value he has gotten. Before the start of the season, the Phillies looked like they had their number four man in the rotation in Taijan Walker. Walker has either struggled mightily or been injured which opened the opportunity for Sanchez.
The southpaw punched his ticket to his first all-star game and has been one of the most consistent players this season in baseball. Sanchez is 9-9 with a 3.51 ERA. The pitcher even with an extremely reliable season is only rostered in 35.5% of ESPN fantasy leagues. While he isn’t even the top three pitcher in the Phillies rotation, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t become a reliable fantasy option for owners and the importance of this type of value as playoffs are close is very important.
Rest of Season Outlook
Sanchez has had a dip since the All-Star break but just two starts ago, the lefty threw a complete game against the Washington Nationals. Sanchez has that capability to go deep because he is more of a ground ball pitcher which leads to shorter at-bats because players aren’t striking out a lot to him. While strikeouts are important in fantasy, outs, and innings are as well.
Sanchez provides good length in the majority of his starts. But at the same time, outside of that complete game, Sanchez did struggle against the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks. While this hasn’t been a great stretch for Sanchez, he has proven all year that he can provide the necessary value for a starting pitcher. As fantasy playoffs are arriving, the pitcher position might be the most important. Those players have the ability with one start to be able to win a fantasy championship.
Even though one catastrophic start could lose you a title, Sanchez might not win you a championship alone. He certainly won’t lose one and that allows fantasy owners to not panic in starting a pitcher for fantasy baseball.
