In this space, I’m going to help you to identify potential impact additions in fantasy baseball leagues. I’ll make an effort to tailor this column to all league sizes, recommending players that could be available in shallow, deeper, and AL- or NL-only formats.
The time to grind is now. If you are in striking distance in your fantasy league, you must keep your foot on the gas pedal over the final seven weeks of the season. While others may have turned their attention to fantasy football, there are plenty of points to be gained in the standings.
Fantasy Impact Addition: Osvaldo Bido
Most fantasy managers aren’t paying particularly close attention to the Oakland Athletics these days – especially to their pitching staff. But the way that Oswaldo Bido has been throwing the ball lately, it would be a mistake to overlook him.
The 28-year-old right-hander has been terrific in 12 appearances (six starts) this season, registering a 3.40 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and a 45/21 K/BB across 45 innings. Since the calendar flipped to August, he has been especially dominant – with a 1.00 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, and a 17/6 K/BB over 18 innings in his last three starts.
He draws a particularly juicy matchup on Thursday afternoon, taking on a Rays’ offense that has been struggling to put runs on the board as of late. Expect him to work six innings, punch out a handful of batters with strong ratios, and a shot at a victory. For a player who is currently rostered in just 34 percent of all Yahoo leagues, he makes for a tremendous streaming option on Thursday afternoon.
Fantasy Impact Addition: Parker Meadows
It was honestly surprising when I glanced and saw that Parker Meadows was only rostered in nine percent of all Yahoo leagues. That’s lunacy.
Since returning from the injured list on August 6, the 24-year-old outfielder has been slashing a sizzling .352/.375/.574 with a homer, five RBI, nine runs scored, and five stolen bases in 14 games.
He’s locked into the leadoff spot in an improving Tigers’ lineup – which should lead to ample opportunities to steal bases and score runs over the final six weeks of the season. He also can contribute to the power categories. While he’s swinging a hot bat, he’s functioning as a five-category contributor.
Meadows isn’t going to go out and single-handedly win you a fantasy championship this season, but he’s exactly the type of glue piece that all rosters need to take their team to the next level. Go grab him off waivers and ride the hot streak – especially if you’re looking to make up ground in stolen bases.
