In this space I’m going to help you to identify potential impact additions in fantasy baseball leagues. I’ll make an effort to tailor this column to all league sizes, recommending players that could be available in shallow, deeper and AL- or NL-only formats.
The time to grind is now. If you are in striking distance in your fantasy league, you must keep your foot on the gas pedal over the final seven weeks of the season. While others may have turned their attention to fantasy football, there are plenty of points to be gained in the standings.
Fantasy Impact Addition: Gavin Lux
Many fantasy managers have written off Gavin Lux after several disappointing seasons. Perhaps that’s why he’s only rostered in 33 percent of all Yahoo leagues despite his recent hot streak.
While his overall numbers on the season don’t look appealing, if we narrow the lens to his last 32 games (since July 9) Luz is slashing a robust .358/.427/.599 with six homers, 22 RBI, 15 runs scored and a stolen base. The former top prospect is still just 26-years-old and could finally be having the breakout season that prognosticators had anticipated.
He’s locked into everyday playing time at second base, as the Dodgers moved Mookie Betts back to right field in part to keep Lux’s bat in their lineup. He possesses eligibility at both second base and in the outfield and should be a viable contributor in fantasy leagues for the remainder of the 2024 season.
If you’re not getting quality production out of the middle infield slot or are dealing with inconsistency at second base, give Lux a serious look.
Fantasy Impact Addition: Valente Bellozo
Alright, this recommendation is for those of you that play in deeper leagues. Bellozo is currently rostered in just five percent of all Yahoo leagues, one percent of NFBC Online Championship leagues (12-teams) and 14 percent of NFBC Main Event leagues (15-team).
The 24-year-old right-hander has been awfully impressive through his first five big-league starts, registering a 2.28 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and a 23/6 K/BB across 27 2/3 innings. Since returning from Triple-A Jacksonville on August 2 he has been phenomenal – with a minuscule 1.02 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and a 13/5 K/BB in 17 2/3 frames.
The Marlins shuffled their rotation around to get Bellozo a second start this week, so he’ll take on the Mets and Paul Blackburn on Sunday morning. He makes for an outstanding streaming option for the weekend in leagues that utilize daily moves, but he also has viability going forward.
After this week’s matchup against the Mets, Bellozo will take on the Cubs at home next Saturday, the Rockies in Colorado, the Nationals at home and then he’ll draw a juicy two-start week with the Pirates in Pittsburgh and the Nationals in Washington.
Can he continue at the absolutely absurd pace that he has been on over his last three starts? Unlikely. What he can be though, is a solid addition to your rotation over the next four weeks – helping to propel your fantasy squad up the standings for the stretch run.
