Day four of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati has some blockbuster matchups as the tennis world moves closer to the final major of the year. But some players have been on the right path on the North American hard court swing, others are still playing their first hard court matches since March.
This benefits DFS picks as some of the top players are not in top form and with this tournament being a best two out of three set format, this allows more upsets to happen which you will see with the DFS value picks of the day.
WTA Value Picks for DFS
A great value pick is to pick Canadian Leylah Fernandez at $5,500 in her match against the number four ranked player Elena Rybakina. On paper, people would assume that Rybakina would be the heavy favorite. But, the number four seed has had a roller coaster of a year as she has spent most of the year either injured or with an illness.
Rybakina hasn’t played a match since her semifinal appearance at Wimbledon which took place over a month ago. Fernandez on the other hand has been playing a lot more consistently in form. Last week in her home country of Canada, Fernandez went to the semifinals of doubles with her sister. That could be a momentum shift in her season for her all-around game.
Fernandez has been more consistent recently and she is playing against a great player who hasn’t played in a while. Good value there even if Rybakina wins in three grueling sets.
American Taylor Townsend at $6,700 has great value in her second-round match against tenth-seeded Daria Kasatkina. For the second consecutive week, the American got through qualifying to make it to the main draw and last week in Toronto, Townsend made it all the way to the quarterfinals.
Kasatkina on the other hand has had a rough start to the North American hard court swing. Kasatkina is 0-2 so far on this swing with losses in both Washington D.C. and Toronto.
Townsend is coming off a tough battle yesterday in which she defeated fellow American Caroline Dolehide in three tough sets which included a third-set tiebreak. But Kasatkina is playing her worst tennis of the season while Townsend is playing her best singles tennis in years.
ATP Value Pick for DFS
The big upset that has solid value for DFS is to pick China’s Zhizhen Zhang in his second-round match against sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev. Rublev is coming off of a finals appearance in Montreal last week but history tells us that players that go very deep in the tournament in Canada struggle the following week in Cincinnati.
This has already been the case this year as the man who beat Rublev last week to win the National Bank Open in Alexei Popyrin lost in his first-round match. Zhang has been one of the most solid players on tour and that included winning a silver medal in mixed doubles at the Olympics. Zhang is coming off a career highlight while Rublev is coming off a final in which he definitely thought he should have won.
