Back in April, there was a lot of uncertainty about what the Patriots would do at the 3rd spot in the draft. Ultimately, they chose to draft QB Drake Maye, Maye is known for his strong arm, accuracy, and mobility. His play style features a blend of powerful throws downfield and effective short to intermediate passes. Maye’s athleticism allows him to extend plays with his legs, making him dangerous both as a passer and a runner. His poise in the pocket, combined with his ability to read defences, makes him a versatile and impactful quarterback.
However, he also has his downside. He is young and underdeveloped in some aspects of the game. He is also sometimes error-prone and his overall decision-making has plenty of room to improve. It is important to keep in mind that he is a rookie and that the Patriots have to understand this and act accordingly. However, the fact that he has potential is undeniable.
Drake Maye 2024 Outlook
Maye begins the transition to the NFL in a curious position. He goes to the Patriots who just lost Bill Belichick after an incredibly disappointing 2023 season. Now with Maye as the potential franchise QB for the next decade, there are indeed higher expectations. Nevertheless, there are still many factors to consider.
First would be the fact that it is healthy for Drake Maye to not start immediately, this would help him get his bearings and slowly transition without the weight of expectation. For this purpose, Jacoby Brissett will be handling the starting QB job at least for the first few games.
Secondly, comes the fact that we’ve yet to see an identity for the patriot offence and roster as a whole. So whatever they come up with will be interesting to see. For now, one cannot make offensive assessments other than what we´ve already seen.
Roster-wise, Maye would have a very similar offence as last year with the Patriots, he´ll be sure to send the ball to Hunter Henry and Kendrick Bourne. However, also unproved talents such as Ja´lynn Polk or Jamichael Hasty could slightly change the Patriots’ dynamic we´ve been used to for a while.
Finally, the transition from college football to pro football is incredibly difficult, so much so that many players never succeed. This ultimately proves to be an essential factor for a player such as Drake Maye, who´ll eventually have to make this leap but is by no means expected to excel at his role immediately.
Drake Maye 2023 Production
According to USA Today, Drake Maye threw for 3,608 yards. In 269 completions out of 425 pass attempts. Additionally, he passed for 24 TDs and 9 INTs.
Even though College Football is different from NFL football, some of the traits Maye exhibited, such as explosiveness, creativity, intensity and grit are qualities Patriots fans are praying he can take with them to the NFL.
Final Thoughts
At the moment, Drake Maye can be considered a bit of a wild card. Even though he is known for his explosive, creative and organized game, there is simply too much uncertainty regarding both him and the Patriot’s offence as a whole.
Our recommendation would be to take the risk and draft him, but only in the late rounds of the draft and as a reserve. In addition, you can expect him to not play for at least the first 3-5 weeks of the season.
