Jameson Williams has had one of the most tumultuous starts to his NFL career. An ACL injury kept him out most of his rookie season. Then, the former first-round pick received a suspension for violating the league’s gambling policy. On the field, he has had issues with drops but has also had some electric moments. This year, everything is normal. He has a full training camp and is healthy going into the season. Is a breakout year incoming for the Williams?
Jameson Williams 2023 Stats And Fantasy Production
Jameson Williams caught 24 passes for 354 yards and two touchdowns. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson also used him on the jet sweeps, and he had three rushes for 29 yards and another score. His speed is devastating. In the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers, Williams got the scoring started with a 40-yard end around, showcasing his big play ability.
Williams spent most of the year behind Josh Reynolds on the depth chart. With the emergence of Sam LaPorta, there weren’t many targets that went his way. He only caught more than two passes in a game twice and was only targeted more than three times in four games. In 12-team leagues, he likely sat on waivers or someone’s bench as his inconsistency left him unplayable. However, there is some optimism for 2024.
Jameson Williams 2024 Fantasy Outlook
One thing that increases the value of Williams is how high the coaches are on him. Head coach Dan Campbell had this to say about Jameson Williams in May during OTAs.
“We’re two practices in (to OTAs) and if you said, ‘Give me one player that is the most improved from that start to finish in that time,’ and Jamo would be that guy right now. He is a man on a mission, and I’m just going to leave it at that.”
With Reynolds gone, Williams is the clear WR2 on the team. Reynolds got 11% of the target share last year, which will now be up for grabs. The former Alabama receiver is a deep threat, and while Jared Goff hasn’t been known for his deep passing, he is coming off his best season in terms of throwing the deep ball. It would not be surprising to see the Lions take at least one deep shot a game for Williams. Even if he only catches 30% of those targets, it would be a massive upgrade.
Final Thoughts
FantasyData has Jameson Williams as the 53rd-ranked wide receiver. This feels about right, to be honest. Drafting Williams isn’t a fool’s errand. There’s a real upside, and this will be his first normal season, and he isn’t buried on the depth chart. He still is likely a boom-or-bust player on a week-to-week basis. However, if he can develop some consistency, he could become the steal of your draft.
Developing consistency is the key to becoming relevant in fantasy football. In deeper leagues, Williams will be a player who will win you a few weeks when he has a huge game. The Detroit Lions offense has shown they can be one of the best in the league. If they can figure out how to get Williams integrated, he could end the season as a top-25 receiver easily.
