The Kansas City Chiefs bolstered the wide receiver core by drafting Xavier Worthy and signing Hollywood Brown in the offseason. The 2023 receiver room in Kansas City was disappointing, aside from emerging star Rashee Rice. Many of them struggled to catch the football and were not viable options for star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs invested a first round pick to select Xavier Worthy and he is expected to return on that investment. The electric speedster from Texas provides an element in the Chiefs offense that we haven’t seen since Tyreek Hill. It is easy to salivate at the thought of his game-changing speed paired with Patrick Mahomes’ ability.
Can Xavier Worthy force his way into fantasy football lineups 2024, and how much value can he bring for seasons to come?
Xavier Worthy 2023 Production
Xavier Worthy was awesome over his 3 seasons at the University of Texas. He hauled in 197 balls, for 2,755 yards, and 29 touchdowns in that span. More impressively, Worthy posted a 62 reception, 981 yards, and 12 touchdown season as a true freshman.
Xavier Worthy was one of the most electric college players that we have seen in a long time. He backed the hype by breaking the 40 yard dash record at the combine, running a 4.21.
The olympic speedster obviously showcased his down the field talent, but he was also extremely dangerous on screen plays and one-on-one matchups. Worthy often snapped routes down to make easy catches against preventative defenses, and his 7.7 yards after the catch created problems.
Xavier Worthy is listed at 5’11 and 165 pounds which seems a little generous. Can his stature translate heading into the NFL, and will he be durable enough to produce week in and week out for fantasy football relevance?
Xavier Worthy 2024 Projection
As the roster stands right now, Worthy is at best the 3rd option in Kansas City. Travis Kelce will demand a bulk of the target share, and 2nd year receiver Rashee Rice will look to make another leap. However, the impending suspension for Rice will force a competition between Worthy and Hollywood Brown for the rights to WR1 whenever that suspension is handed out.
Xavier Worthy is projected to finish with 57 catches, 845 yards, and 6 touchdowns according to Fantasy Pros in 2024. In redraft leagues, Worthy is being drafted as the WR43 at pick 99. In Dynasty, he is being drafted as the WR29 at pick 58.
At pick 99 in redraft, Worthy is surrounded by the likes of Christian Watson and Courtland Sutton. Worthy has a much higher ceiling than both of those guys heading into 2024, especially if Rice is handed a suspension.
At pick 58 in dynasty, he is being drafted around Davante Adams and Deebo Samuel. At this price, you are paying for a receiver who is expected to finish as a top 20 wide receiver in 2024 and for seasons to come.
Final Thoughts
In redraft, Worthy is absolutely worth the risk in round 10. If Rice gets handed a multi game suspension, Worthy could erupt in 2024 and emerge as the #1 wide receiver in KC.
There is a little more risk when considering dynasty leagues. Worthy’s skill set certainly has top 20 upside, but the presence of Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce is worrisome for years to come. The price is a little too high in dynasty, but do not be surprised if Xavier Worthy finds himself in a Tyreek-eqsue role and cements himself as a staple in Andy Reid’s offense.
