The Washington Nationals are set to take on the Baltimore Orioles in the second game of the Beltway Series. Washington squeaked out a victory, scoring one in the top of the ninth to win 4-3. Baltimore’s offensive struggles continued as they couldn’t capitalize on critical opportunities. The Orioles will look to even the series on Saturday. Key Stats
Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals were generally outplayed yesterday, but got the hits when it mattered most. As a team, they only had five hits but were able to score four runs. DH James Wood was responsible for two RBIs and a home run last night. First baseman Nathaniel Lowe also homered in last night’s game. It is worth noting that leadoff hitter CJ Abrams went 0 for 5 last night. He has been one of the hottest hitters on the team and a hitless night has become a rare occurrence.
Right-hander Jake Irvin takes the mound for the Washington Nationals in game two. In his last start against the Atlanta Braves, he threw for six innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs, and striking out one batter. Outside of a rough outing against the Phillies on April 30, Irvin has been a solid starter, consistently going five or six innings and allowing two earned runs or less.
Baltimore Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles amassed 14 hits in last night’s game but were not able to push more than three runs across home plate. As a team, they were 4 for 15 with RISP. If there was a bright spot yesterday for the Orioles, it was that catcher Adley Rutschman went 3 for 5 at the plate. He had been struggling lately so hopefully he is getting out of his slump.
Right-hander Kyle Gibson gets the start for the Orioles in game two. He has struggled to start the season with an ERA I had to check twice to make sure I wasn’t mistaken. In his last start against the lowly Los Angeles Angels, he pitched four innings, giving up seven hits and five earned runs. He hasn’t gone more than four innings in any of his starts this season.

Prediction
I know it’s a small sample size, but I have a hard time betting on the pitcher who has an ERA of 13.11. The Nationals didn’t even play that well last night, and yet they got the victory. Irvin has been solid for the Nationals and is getting a lineup that is struggling outside of Gunnar Henderson. Furthermore, Abrams went 0 for 5 and should pick up some hits in the series soon. I’ll hedge a bit by taking the spread in case the Orioles’ offense has a good day.
