For tennis fans, this is one of the most exciting days on the calendar. For DFS players, there are value picks aplenty. Day one of the U.S. Open in New York starts on Monday. As always, it is the final major of the year and this tournament has some of the most talked about storylines all year. Top players not in the best form, a doping case controversy and a raucous New York crowd ready to rock and roll. DFS wise, there are some great value picks on day one of the tournament.
WTA DFS Value Picks
A great value pick to kickoff the U.S Open is to select Katerina Siniakova at $5,100 in her first round match against American Madison Keys. Keys is a former U.S Open finalist and is seeded 14 at this tournament. But, this has been far from vintage Maddy Keys form. Keys suffered a heartbreaking injury towards the end of her round of 16 match at Wimbledon which led to her stopping the match.
Keys only played one match on the North American hard court swing and that was a straight set loss to Peyton Stearns in Canada. Siniakova is coming off a gold medal in mixed doubles at the Olympics and her best singles result of the year which was a semifinals appearance in Canada. This has upset city written all over it.
One of the most solid players on tour also has some great value in DFS and that is taking Elise Mertens at $7,700 in her match against Veronika Kudermetova. Kudermetova had a very good 2023 season but things have not worked out for her in 2024 and that includes any momentum heading into the last major of the year. Kudermetova hasn’t won a match since mid June and that came on the grass.
She played one match in June, none in July and one so far in August. She has no form coming into the tournament. Mertens on the other side has played more matches and have beaten some solid opponents. Mertens even beat two time U.S Open champion Naomi Osaka in straight sets in Canada so Mertens brings lots of value at this price.
ATP DFS Value Pick
While this could be one of the biggest upsets of day one. A good flyer and value pick is to take American Brandon Nakashima in his first round match against 15th seeded Holger Rune. Nakashima has had a strong summer which includes round of 16 appearances in both Canada and Cincinnati. The American had some impressive wins against Tommy Paul, Taylor Fritz and Arthur Fils.
Nakashima is one of the least flashiest and emotional players on tour which should help him against the wildly inconsistent and young Holger Rune. Rune is coming off of a semifinal appearance in Cincinnati but Rune is extremely up and down. He has the talent of a top 5 player but has not found anywhere near that form consistently in his career. Expecting a drop-off after a great result against a player who won’t beat himself leaves the door open for a fantastic start for an American at his home tournament.
