Tyler Lockett has been a mid to low-end fantasy wide receiver over the past few seasons. His veteran experience has allowed him to put up solid numbers continuously, and while his best days are in the rearview mirror, he still holds fantasy value and attention. Lockett may not have the name value or be able to produce like he used to, but he could be a fantasy secret weapon this season.
Tyler Lockett Fantasy Upside
On the upside, no one is talking about Tyler Lockett. In the offseason, the Seattle Seahawks made a controversial move by trading for Sam Howell. Geno Smith was the Seahawk’s secure QB1 last season, but with the move for Howell, all of the attention has been around the quarterbacks. That said, Lockett should fall to the later rounds and have the upside of a solid WR2. Though it is risky to waste a draft pick on him, the risk will not be as substantial as other late-round WR2 hopefuls in fantasy.
The Seattle Seahawks also have DK Metcalf and young phenom hopeful Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the passing game. While this could also be an obvious downside, it has previously opened up multiple chances for big games. With his years counting down to retirement, Lockett understands how to play his role. With opposing defenses game planning around Metcalf and Kenneth Walker III, Lockett should have good opportunities to light up the fantasy scoreboard. Though he may not produce as much as fantasy owners are used to, he should still be a good flex option.
Tyler Lockett’s Fantasy Downside
The downside for Tyler Lockett could finally hit the inevitable cliff of veteran wide receivers. However unlikely, coming into his 10th season undoubtedly creates concern for fantasy owners. Another downside to watch is the internal drama of the Seahawks. Though it is not personal drama, the possible switch of quarterbacks and the distrust in the roster could affect his production on the field.
Lockett among other weapons on the offense, could also lose production based on the number of targets. Though every receiver has the talent to get the ball thrown to them 10+ times a game, targets will be split between players. It is uncertain who the WR2 will be at the end of the year for the Seahawks, but Lockett may be going in the wrong direction on the fantasy rankings.
With a draft projection in the later rounds and a possible upside of a good WR2, Tyler Lockett will not be someone who will make or break your fantasy season. While the upside could result in a championship-winning piece in the flex or WR2 position, the downside could be a draft pick that spends the entire season on the fantasy bench. Though his production on the field will help the Seahawks, it may not help you win games.
