It was only a year ago when NFL fans were talking about Tua Tagovailoa possibly retiring after his tragic concussion. The former Alabama quarterback decided to stay in the game, though, and he finished out the 2024-2025 season despite some lackluster performances. Now in his fifth season, plenty of fantasy football players are hesitant to pick up Tua just because of the very high injury risk. The funny thing is, given the situation he’s in, Tua can easily have a bounce-back year.
Tua Tagovailoa 2024 Stats and Fantasy Production
Most of Tua Tagovailoa’s stats need to be taken with a grain of salt, considering he missed six games after a brutal concussion. Most Tua Tagovailoa owners were disappointed last year, but looking at his stats, he didn’t have as bad a year as it might seem.
He had a QBR of 60.3, which puts him right between Trevor Lawrence and Sam Darnold. He also had a decent completion percentage of 72.9%. These numbers would indicate that he is in the middle of the pack of quarterbacks, but not at the bottom.
In terms of fantasy, Tua had a run after his injury where he looked like a reliable starter. From Week 11 to Week 14, Tua scored at least 23.5 points in each game. He closed out the year poorly, but his performance in the middle of the season put the Dolphins in the playoff discussion, albeit only for a short time.
Tua Tagovailoa 2025 Fantasy Outlook
The reason why it’s not a guarantee that Tua is having another bad year is that all of the other pieces on the Dolphins are still in place. They still have Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Devon Achane, all of whom benefit from Tua being under center. Even Nick Westbrook-Ikhine will see some targets after his departure from the Tennessee Titans.
Despite all of these things being in place, Tua is ranked very low on most players’ big boards right now. Fantasy Pros has him ranked down at number 22 behind the likes of J.J. McCarthy and Dak Prescott.
That placement isn’t entirely wrong either; a player as injury-prone as Tua Tagovailoa comes with a lot of risk. Essentially, he should never be taken as a QB1 since a fantasy player should want a consistent QB1 who should be playing most of the season.
Even as a QB2, players might want to stay away from Tua since there should be other, more reliable options available. In shorter drafts, guys like Sam Darnold and Matthew Stafford could still be on the board in the 15th round. When it comes to big drafts, it’s more likely that someone will have to pick up Tua at the end of the draft.
One situation where it’s recommended that someone take Tagovailoa is if they already have either Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle on their roster. Both of those players get lots of yards and lots of touchdowns, so Tua would naturally benefit from those points as well if he is throwing the football.
