TreVeyon Henderson 2024 Devy Outlook: The Forgotten Man

Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson against Michigan

Heading into his senior year, Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson looks to boost his draft stock after an injury plagues two seasons. The former five-star recruit broke out in his freshman season with 1,248 rushing yards, 15 touchdowns, 312 receiving yards, and four receiving touchdowns. During his Sophomore season, Henderson appeared in eight games, several of them while playing with an injured foot.

During his junior season, he missed three games with an injury and was still not at 100% early in the season. In all three seasons, he averaged above 5.3 yards per carry, showing that he is highly productive even through injuries. With an elite running back partner in 2024, will he keep his production up with fewer carries?

Despite missing three games through October, TreVeyon Henderson carried the ball 156 times for 926 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. He also caught 19 passes for 229 receiving yards. Henderson averaged 5.9 yards per carry, putting him in the top 30 in the nation with the highest average yards from running backs with over 100 carries. In only four games out of ten he played last season did he fall under 5.8 yards per carry.

In devy circles, TreVeyon Henderson has become the forgotten man due to his injuries and potentially Ohio State’s struggles over the last two seasons. Despite that, Henderson has never looked out of his depth as a running back who can be effective at the next level. His injuries have nothing to do with his physique; they are more down to bad luck. A healthy season in 2024 will squash any concerns about his ability to stay healthy.

TreVeyon Henderson 2024 Devy Outlook

It will look much different for TreVeyon Henderson as he enters the 2024 season. During his freshman season and 10-game junior season, he carried the ball 183 and 156 times, respectively. During those two seasons, there was no high-quality talent to take away any shares. The only reason he was second on the Ohio State carry count in 2022 was the foot injury mentioned.

Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day is desperate for a National Title and has gone all in with the NIL money. Day brought in super-talented running back Quinshon Judkins from the transfer portal. Judkins comes from Ole Miss, where he carried the ball over 270 times in both his seasons in college football. Now, both must coexist in the Ohio State backfield with likely less than their usual carries.

Henderson is said to be happy with this, permitting Ryan Day to do what’s necessary to win. It’s a great attitude from the senior, and losing out on production isn’t the end of the world for Henderson’s devy stock.

Final Thoughts

Not declaring for the draft and heading back to college for your senior year is not considered a negative amongst devy players. We saw Ohio State wide receiver Chris Olave do the same, and it’s worked out fine for him at the next level. Henderson heading back to college is about a chance to win it all in his final season.

Despite his injuries, TreVeyon Henderson has shown his ability to still perform at a high level despite not hitting that outstanding form we saw as a freshman. In the 2024 season, he will see fewer carries with Quinshon Judkins on the team. Again, this is a good thing, as we don’t need to see him have more carries than Judkins, as long as it’s not lopsided. It also gives him less tread on the tires, meaning a lower risk of injuries.  What devy players want to see is him staying healthy for the entire season while staying consistent with his performances.
