Travis Hunter 2024 Devy Outlook

From Suwanee, Georgia, Travis Hunter was rated as a five-star prospect and the number one overall player in the 2022 recruiting class, according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings. Out of high school, Hunter decided to commit to Deion Sanders at HBCU Jackson State.

Alongside fellow freshman and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Hunter led Jackson State to the HBCU national championship in 2022. Hunter immediately proved he was a bit of a unicorn, as he stared at both sides of the ball. While at Jackson State, he recorded 18 receptions for 190 yards and four touchdowns, while also hauling in two interceptions on defense.

After Coach Prime took the vacant head coaching job at Colorado, the two highly regarded athletes followed. Hunter, again, proved his versatility by catching 57 balls for 721 yards and five touchdowns and three more interceptions on defense in 2023. Despite missing three games due to injury, Hunter led the country in total plays with 1,102 and was named a consensus First Team All-American as a defensive back.

Hunter is one of the most talked about NFL prospects in recent memory. His versatility has scouts and general managers salivating at his potential at the next level. As a cornerback, Travis Hunter is a lockdown defensive back and has elite size at 6’1” and 185 lbs. He has exceptional ball skills, a high on-field IQ, and great straight-line speed to keep up with any receiver.

As a wide receiver, Travis Hunter possesses an All-Pro skillset. He is explosive with the ball in his hands and knows when and how to make route adjustments. Hunter also has elite athleticism and a change of direction, which creates matchup problems. His versatility and high-end production on both sides of the ball indicate an immediate impact at the next level.

Devy Outlook

Travis Hunter has been seen as a high first-round pick since his days at Collins Hill High School. While his ceiling is probably higher as a cornerback, his superior athleticism also makes him a potential All-Pro as a wide receiver. Highly likely to split time at both positions, Hunter’s fantasy value could take a hit, as that type of snap volume is unprecedented in the NFL.

If he were to focus on one position over the other, he would have elite fantasy potential at either. As a cornerback, he would be one of the most valuable players in IDP leagues. In leagues that require a cornerback, Hunter would be a must-start. As a wide receiver, Hunter could be one of the most dynamic offensive players in the NFL. Names like Champ Bailey, Charles Woodson, and Deion Sanders get tossed around when comparing Travis Hunter. However, his ability to be a full-time player on both sides of the ball makes him a unicorn that is incomparable.
