Tony Pollard 2024 Outlook: Thanks, But No Thanks

Tony Pollard fantasy outlook

What the heck happened to Tony Pollard? This dude was destined to be Tony Dorsett meets Emmitt Smith for the Dallas Cowboys. He was supposed to rush for 2,000 yards and lead us to the Super Bowl. Jerry Jones promised it was all going to happen in 2023!

But it didn’t work out. Because it rarely does with the Dallas Cowboys. Tony Pollard was supposed to be the bellcow back last season, but he couldn’t step up to the plate. Don’t get me wrong, he gave it the old college try, but it just wasn’t enough. And with the salary cap situation in Dallas being very tight, there was no way for the team to bring Pollard back. He was a free agent looking to get paid, and he did!

Will Tony Pollard step up in Tennessee?

Tony Pollard left the Cowboys this offseason and ended up signing with the Tennessee Titans for 21 million dollars over three years. Last season was a bit of a disappointing one as Pollard tried being that lead back for Dallas. He ended up carrying the rock 252 times for 1,005 yards and six touchdowns while catching 55 passes for 31 yards with zero TDs. The numbers aren’t bad, but they aren’t great either.

Tony Pollard was supposed to form a Big 3 with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, two offensive dynamos who blew up last season. Prescott even finished second in the MVP voting after throwing for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns with just nine interceptions. On the other side, Lamb had 1,749 yards receiving with 12 TDs. Those two balled out, so the talent was there for Pollard to succeed. Unfortunately, he just wasn’t able to increase his production and be the force that was needed.

New city, same Tony Pollard

Tony Pollard replaces Derek Henry in Tennessee, but it’s not that simple. Tyjae Spears remains a Titan, and he looked excellent as a rookie last season. He rushed 100 times for 453 yards and 2 TDs while catching 52 balls for 385 yards and 1 Touchdown. The numbers may seem light, but the sky is the limit if he gets more chances this year.

The rest of the offense theoretically should open things up for Pollard, who could serve as a safety blanket for quarterback Will Levis. Wide receivers Calvin Ridley, DeAndre Hopkins, and Tyler Boyd form an excellent trio, which means opposing defenses can’t load 8 men in the box to stop the run. That means Tony Pollard should get plenty of chances to show off his speed out of the backfield. The question is, will he?

Final Thoughts

Superman is faster than a speeding bullet. He can also jump buildings in a single bound. Unfortunately, Tony Pollard ain’t him. So don’t waste a high-value pick on someone who very well could disappoint this season. Instead, take Tyjae Spears and get production without a high pick.
