This past Sunday was National Tight Ends Day. While many casual fans may laugh at the idea of a day like that, the NFL delivered. Tight Ends accounted for 16 of this past week’s touchdowns which was a season high for the 2024 season. It’s not clear if NFL teams were aware of the day and made sure they got their tight end the ball. It also seems like a coincidence. Week 8 delivered the best fantasy points for tight ends all year by far but fantasy owners want consistency to carry over week by week and that starts with Week 9.
Top Three Tight End Pickups for Week 9
Broncos TE Adam Trautman
The Bronco’s tight end was definitely one of the more unrecognizable names that had a big Week 8 in the league. Trautman at times has been Denver’s third-string tight end but things opened up this past week. Head coach Sean Payton benched Greg Dulcich while Lucas Krull was banged up. Trautman then became the starter and absolutely delivered. He had 4 catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.
While fantasy owners won’t be expecting 18 fantasy points every week, that doesn’t mean that this isn’t a viable pickup. Trautman is available in a majority of fantasy leagues and this is the best time to take a chance. The Broncos will be taking on the Ravens this week, whose secondary has been bad of late. Look for the Broncos offense to continue their momentum and that means Trautman should be in the mix.
Chargers TE Will Dissly
The Chargers tight end has been turning into quarterback Justin Herbert’s most trusted targets. In the week eight victory over the Saints, Dissly tied with running back J.K. Dobbins for the team lead in targets with seven. On the day, Dissly had 5 catches for 41 yards. The only major concern for Dissly in fantasy is that he has not scored a single touchdown in the 2024 season.
Other than that, he still is a major element of the Chargers offense that is dealing with injuries at the wide receiver position. This is the best waiver wire pickup this week because there is consistency that Dissly at least will get his targets. This means that this is the rare tight-end find that fantasy owners will get guaranteed production.
Bengals TE Mike Gesicki
The former Penn State tight end had his strongest week of the season since Week 2. In the blowout loss to the Eagles this past Sunday, Gesicki had 7 catches for 73 yards but did have a fumble. The Bengals were without number two receiver Tee Higgins which led to Gesicki becoming more of a focal point in Cincinnati’s offense. Cincinnati has little to no run game, which means fantasy owners can expect Joe Burrow to throw the ball in the 35-40 range a game and Gesicki should get his targets.
With or without Tee Higgins, Gesicki is clearly a reliable piece for this offense moving forward and still is the best target for the Bengals in the red zone. This tight end should be another easy pickup as the Bengals take on the Raiders in Week 9.
