After another solid week for tight ends in the NFL, that doesn’t mean that there are now tight ends that most fantasy owners can have the utmost confidence in starting on a weekly basis. This position is still about players coming out of nowhere and putting up some fantasy points. With that being said, many owners change tight ends through the waiver wire weekly, which means figuring out which one to get can make or break a week for you. That’s why this position is of the utmost importance in waiver wire.
Top Three Tight End Pickups for Week 8
Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Noah Gray
While the two-time defending Super Bowl champs are not playing great, they are the last undefeated team in the sport. The offense has had major injuries as the team lost both their number one running back and top two receivers so early in the year. But that means there are plenty of other pass catchers in Kansas City. Noah Gray might be Travis Kelce’s backup, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t productive. Since the injuries have taken place, Gray’s snaps have significantly increased, as has his production.
This past week, Gray had double-digit fantasy points for the first time this season with four catches for a 66-yard game. The Chiefs might be the most banged-up team in the AFC, and Patrick Mahomes has not looked like himself to start the year. But surely, this offense will click into high gear soon, which means somebody has to step up outside of Kelce, which could be Noah Gray.
New England Patriots Tight End Austin Hooper
While Austin Hooper seems far from his Pro Bowl days in Atlanta, he is one of the most important targets for a youthful Patriots offense. Since rookie quarterback Drake Maye took over, the Pats’ offense has improved. Maye is getting the ball down the field on a consistent basis, but the problem is this might be the worst wide receiver room in the league.
Talent is hard to find on the outside for New England, but where there is some reliability is at tight end with Hooper and Hunter Henry. Hooper might be the number two tight end, but that doesn’t mean he is barely on the field. Maye has not yet found that go-to connection, and when there is a rookie quarterback, reliable tight ends become even more valuable. This is easily the biggest risk of the week, but with a struggling Jets defense, this is a good flyer pick for week eight.
WashingtonCommanders Tight End Zach Ertz
The Commanders dominated the Panthers in week seven but lost starting quarterback Jayden Daniels to a rib injury, and he has been designated as a week-to-week. With Marcus Mariota at quarterback, Washington still looked good, but it was against the worst team in the league. The guy who has been going under the radar during this season for Washington has been veteran Zach Ertz.
The Super Bowl champ has had two consecutive double-digit fantasy weeks and has three on the season. With or without the star rookie at the helm, Ertz should be picked up in most leagues as it seems he has become one of the most reliable targets for the Commanders. The target share and production have been there all year, and this is a player who, shockingly, is still available in many fantasy leagues.
