Game Details: Friday, May 23, 2025 @ 8:10 pm EST
Location: Daikin Park in Houston, Texas
E. Hancock (R) vs. R. Gusto (R)
Where to Watch: MLB.TV
The Houston Astros jumped all over George Kirby in his Seattle Mariners 2025 debut. Houston ended up putting up nine runs in a 9-2 rout of their division rival. Seattle’s offensive deficiencies were on full display, and the Houston bullpen didn’t allow a run. While there is still plenty of season left, Houston is happy to be keeping pace in the AL West. Can the Astros bats stay hot, or will Seattle take game two?

Key Stats
Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners didn’t necessarily have a poor showing last night against the Astros. Cal Raleigh, Rowdy Tellez, Dylan Moore, and Randy Arozarena all had two hits apiece, but they couldn’t push anyone across when it mattered. The team as a whole was 2 for 10 with RISP. The opportunities are there and they will look to capitalize on them in game two.
Right-hander Emerson Hancock takes the mound for the Mariners in game two of the series. In his last start against the San Diego Padres, he pitched 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and one earned run. Hancock has had a rough month of May. In three starts, he has pitched 15.2 innings, but given up 18 hits, 10 earned runs, and four home runs.
Houston Astros
In yesterday’s preview, I talked about how Jose Altuve was only hitting .120 over the past seven games, and he needed to pick it up. In last night’s game, he went 2 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs. This shows what the offense can be when one of their best players is hitting well. Shortstop Jeremy Pena also had a two-RBI triple to help the scoring outburst.
Left-hander Ryan Gusto heads to the mound for the Astros. He has been bouncing between the bullpen and the starting rotation, but due to injuries, is set to rejoin the rotation. In his last start against the Kansas City Royals, he was roughed up, giving up seven hits and seven earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.

Prediction
The opportunities were there for the Seattle Mariners last night. Sometimes it just doesn’t happen. That’s baseball. I like them tonight. Gusto’s last start was disastrous, and he seems better in the bullpen rather than starting. I’ll be convinced Altuve is out of his slump once he strings together multiple games like he did last night. I’ll admit as well that the plus-odds on the moneyline are difficult to resist for a division leader. Give me the Mariners.
