The Seattle Mariners head to Texas to take on the Houston Astros in a clash of the top teams in the AL West. Seattle took two out of three earlier this week against the Chicago White Sox. Houston lost two out of three against the Tampa Bay Rays. These two teams met in one of the first series of the year, with Seattle taking two out of three in Washington state. Can the Mariners assert their dominance in the division, or will the Astros close the gap in the division?

Key Stats
Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners catcher, Cal Raleigh, has been mashing the ball over the past week. In the past seven games, he is slashing .250/.385/.800 with two doubles, three home runs, and eight RBIs. He has also drawn five walks, something that the team does well. Shortstop JP Crawford has drawn a whopping eight walks in the past seven games. The Mariners know how to get on base.
Right-hander George Kirby is set to make his season debut for the Seattle Mariners. He is a vital piece to the rotation, but has been out with an injury since March 7th when he was shut down. Kirby has been in Triple-A Tacoma for the past few weeks doing rehab starts. In his most recent start, he allowed four runs on 10 hits in just 4.0 innings, but he had no walks and his velocity was back up to what it was last year.
Houston Astros
Third baseman Isaac Paredes has been red-hot over the past week for the Houston Astros. In the past seven games, he is slashing .286/.333/.714 with four home runs and nine RBIs. One player who needs to step up is Jose Altuve. In the past week, he has only been hitting .120, though he has drawn four walks.
Right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. heads to the mound in the series opener. In his last start against the Texas Rangers, he pitched 4.0 innings, giving up four hits and two unearned runs. The month of May has not been kind to him. In three starts, he has only pitched 8.0 innings, but given up 10 hits, seven earned runs, and seven walks. This includes a start against the Cincinnati Reds where he only lasted 0.1 innings. He’ll have to be careful as the Mariners love to take pitches and get on base.

Prediction
The Seattle Mariners’ season stats are interesting. I keep staring at the batting average on the Tale of the Tape, wondering how they can be hitting .236 as a team. However, their ability to get on base and then hit the long ball has been the reason they can be so deadly. McCullers has struggled with control, giving up a ton of walks. The way to beat Seattle is not to give free passes. I’m always nervous about betting on pitchers making a season debut off an injury, but I’ll lean Seattle here.
