Sam Darnold 2024 Fantasy Outlook: Can He Be More Than A Backup?

Sam Darnold

Sam Darnold is the former 3rd overall pick from the 2018 NFL Draft turned journeyman. Darnold, who will now be suiting up for his fourth team, will have a fresh start in Minnesota with the Vikings.  Though Darnold doesn’t have the fantasy value of a QB1, he may be someone to keep an eye on. Following the Vikings’ selection of JJ McCarthy with the 10th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Darnold will have a chance to compete for the starting spot with the inexperienced rookie, who is now undergoing surgery for a meniscus tear.

Sam Darnold Fantasy Upside

On the upside, Sam Darnold could win the QB1 spot for the Vikings. It was reported on August 13th that McCarthy will undergo knee surgery. Though this is a negative for the team, he is now the undisputed QB1 until McCarthy returns. He will have a chance to prove himself in the preseason and early parts of the year and potentially secure the spot for the future.

To build off of the upside of Darnold starting long-term, the Vikings have one of the best offensive weapons in the NFL, Justin Jefferson. He has had explosive playmakers surrounding him previously in his career but none quite compare to Jefferson. The offense also has playmakers such as Jordan Addison, TJ Hockenson, and Aaron Jones who will be at Darnold’s disposal.

Though his upside depends on the health and performance of McCarthy, Darnold could potentially be someone to look at in larger fantasy leagues as a possible backup. His upside from what we know now isn’t anything to go crazy about so he should go undrafted in most leagues.

Sam Darnold Fantasy Downside

On the downside, Sam Darnold could start a couple of games in relief of McCarthy and not see the field again. Minnesota used their first-round pick on McCarthy hoping to find their franchise quarterback, so he will undoubtedly get a chance to prove his worth. Darnold was brought in to back him up so that is likely how it will unfold.

Another downside is Darnold’s fantasy production history. Even if he does have the starting spot long-term he may not be the type of quarterback you want on your team. His inconsistency and overall lack of production are the reason that he went from franchise hopeful to solid backup.

Though he will likely stay on waivers the entire season, there could be upside in bigger leagues or leagues that offer a super-flex position. If drafted it will be in the last rounds in hopes of a Baker-Mayfield-like turnaround for the Buccaneers last season. Can Darnold redeem himself in Minnesota or will it be more of the past?
