Rico Dowdle is entering into his fourth season with The Dallas Cowboys. The running back from South Carolina has shown well in his limited touches through three seasons. Accumulating 96 carries, 385 rushing yards (4.0 yards per carry), and 2 rushing touchdowns while through the air Dowdle has 17 receptions for 144 yards (8.5 yards per reception) and 2 more touchdowns.
Rico Dowdle has the unique opportunity to take over as the lead back. How will he fare in a backfield with one of the best running backs over the past eight seasons?
2023 Statistics, Opposing Forces for Rico Dowdle
https://gty.im/2165118722
After having the best season of his short NFL career in ’23, Rico Dowdle looks to break out in 2024. He finished the season with only 89 carriers, 361 yards, and 2 touchdowns…
So why is Dowdle ready to break out in 2024? Father time has caught up to Zeke? In his past two seasons, one with Dallas, and one with New England, Elliott has not eclipsed 1,000 all-purpose yards. His yards per carry have been the lowest it’s been throughout his career (3.8 in ‘22 and 3.5 in ’23) and his explosive plays have all but disappeared.
In 2023 The Cowboys committed to running back Tony Pollard. They gave Pollard the keys to the backfield in his first season without Ezekiel Elliott (re-signed with Dallas this offseason). Pollard produced 1,316 all-purpose yards, and 6 total touchdowns (all rushing), on 307 touches. Now Tony Pollard finds himself with the Tennessee Titans. This opens the backfield up to 307 touches for Rico Dowdle to snag.
ADP Heist on Dallas Cowboys Running Back
Currently, the 46th running back off the board on Sleeper. Rico Dowdles ADP of 163.8 shouldn’t scare fantasy managers. For 12-team leagues that puts Dowdle going in rounds 13-14. To begin the season expect a split with Elliott, but by mid-season Dowdle should have control of the backfield. Round 13-14 for a potential number-one running back? Steal.
2024 Fantasy Outlook for Dowdle
Being taken so late into drafts most consider Dowdle to be disposable. As just a spot filler until you need to drop someone to chase a waiver claim. The Cowboys backfield will presumably be running back by committee to start the season. Giving fantasy managers cause for concern, yet there should be no need to worry. With Dowdle’s ADP being so late in the draft he’s worth a look to fill out your roster.
Final thoughts
Given the circumstances, Rico Dowdle is going to be a low-risk, high-reward. Having signed a 1 year, 1.255 million dollar contract this offseason, Dowdle is going to want to show the organization why he deserves to be the number one guy for the Cowboys. If rounds 12-14 come around and you are stuck on what to do, give Rico Dowdle a good long look.
In his situation, in that offense, he is going to have opportunities to excel in 2024. He is going to be a viable flex option weekly once Dallas figures out how they are going to incorporate both backs into the offense.
