Arsenal have signed Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for a fee of up to 42m including add-ons.
Calafiori was named Serie A’s player of the month in May – and won all five of his senior Italy caps this summer.
He made his senior debut for Roma in 2020 and had a loan spell at Genoa before joining Basel in 2022.
The defender spent one season in Switzerland before Bologna signed him for 3.3m.
Arsenal Coach Mikel Arteta called Riccardo Calafiori a “great signing”.
Riccardo is a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger as we push to win major trophies,” he added.
“He has already shown great development in recent seasons with his performances for both Bologna and Italy, with his progression and development in the past year being really impressive.
“We’re looking forward to working with Riccardo, integrating him into the squad, and supporting him in the years to come.”
Riccardo Calafiori is very happy to join Arsenal saying.
I’m really happy to be here,” said Calafiori. “I waited a lot.
Is Riccardo Calafiori Worth the $6m Price Tag in Fantasy Premier League?
Upon joining Arsenal, as very high profile Centerback, people were wondering what his Fantasy Premier League price would be, it works much differently than any other Fantasy like Football as an example.
Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is a game where participants create teams from Premier League players and earn points based on their real-life performance. The season is divided into 38 “Gameweeks”, each consisting of 10 fixtures where each club plays another. Before the Gameweek deadline, which is 90 minutes before the first match, managers must select a starting 11 from their 15-player squad and confirm their final line-up.
You select a squad within a budget of 100 million, which 6 million isn’t a ton but very expensive for a Defender.
The most rewarding way is through goals as defenders will earn six points for every goal they score. That is why picking a goal-scoring defender is vital, The more obvious, and frequent, way is to not concede. Defenders will earn four points for every clean sheet they earn, for Example if Arsenal get a clean sheet, Calafiori earns 6 points.
If a defender assists a goal they will score three FPL points (the same as every other position), while they will score two points if they play more than 60 minutes (excluding added-time). They will score one point if they play up to 60 minutes.
Arsenal defenders were very good last year, That resilience was reflected in the defender standings in 2023/24 Fantasy, with Ben White (6.5m), William Saliba and Gabriel (both 6.0m) occupying the top three places.
Liverpool Defender Trent Alexander Arnold is the highest priced defender at 7m, then Ben White as listed above at 6.5m.
There is only 9 defenders 6m and over, with only 2 above the 6m price tag, all the players are on Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United respectively.
Final Thoughts.
I personally wouldn’t pick Riccardo Calafiori right now for my team, William Saliba is arguably the best defender in the world right now, on Arsenal as well and the same price, and he’s guaranteed to start basically every game, while Calafiori will have some competition for starts consistently this season with Gabriel in the Arsenal team.
