MLB Fantasy: Pickup of the Day (August 28, 2024)

Fantasy

In this space I’m going to help you to identify potential impact additions in fantasy baseball leagues. I’ll make an effort to tailor this column to all league sizes, recommending players that could be available in shallow, deeper and AL- or NL-only formats.

The time to grind is now. If you are in striking distance in your fantasy league, you must keep your foot on the gas pedal over the final seven weeks of the season. While others may have turned their attention to fantasy football, there are plenty of points to be gained in the standings.

Impact Fantasy Addition: Dylan Crews

The Nationals made a fun announcement on Friday that top prospect Dylan Crews would be getting the call on Monday and would make his big-league debut against the Yankees. The 22-year-old outfielder was the second overall selection from the 2023 draft class after Paul Skenes.

He went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout in his debut on Monday night. Crews put up solid, if unspectacular, numbers in the minor leagues – slashing .270/.342/.451 with 13 homers, 68 RBI and 25 stolen bases over 100 games between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester this season.

The Nationals want to give him a nice long look before the season concludes, so expect that he’ll be in the lineup on a nightly basis from here on out. He should be an immediate asset in stolen bases and isn’t going to hurt you in the power categories also.

Crews is currently rostered in only 34 percent of all Yahoo leagues and that feels way too low given the upside that he possesses. In deeper leagues, or any four- or five-outfielder formats, he already appears to be a strong option.

Impact Fantasy Addition: DJ Herz

Staying with the Washington Nationals, it’s about time that we started to give DJ Herz the respect that he deserves as well.

The 23-year-old southpaw has been unbelievable in his seven starts since the All-Star break, registering a 2.62 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a 42/15 K/BB across 34 1/3 innings of work.

His upcoming schedule looks great as well. Herz will take on the Cubs at home on Saturday. Next week he’ll do battle against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Friday. After that, he’ll get the Braves at home, and then a two-start week with the Mets in New York and the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

For a player that is rostered in just 13 percent of all Yahoo leagues, Herz could wind up making a major impact over the final five weeks of the season. Rush to the waiver wire and add him now if possible.
