The New York Mets fell to the New York Yankees in the first game of the series. The bats couldn’t get going for the Mets, and the Yankees jumped out to an early lead. Carlos Rodon won his fourth straight decision, only giving up two hits in five innings of work. Juan Soto returned to Yankee Stadium and was 0 for 2 with three walks. The Mets are sending Griffin Canning to the mound, who has already racked up five wins this season. Can we even the Subway Series on Saturday?

Key Stats
New York Mets
The New York Mets’ offense couldn’t get going last night. Juan Soto continued his disappointing start to the season. While he did get on base three times, all of those were because of walks. He went 0 for 2 officially at the plate. Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor drove in the two runs for the Mets last night. First baseman Pete Alonso went 0 for 4. There were definitely opportunities last night, but the team went 2 for 11 with RISP.
Right-hander Griffin Canning takes the mound, looking to even up the series. He has been one of the most consistent pitchers for the Mets this season. Over his past five starts, he has only allowed four earned runs total. In his previous start against a tough Chicago Cubs lineup, he threw for six innings, allowed two hits, one earned run, and struck out five.
New York Yankees
The heart of the New York Yankees’ lineup continues to do work. Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt had seven of the eight Yankee hits last night. Judge’s batting average currently sits at .414, as he continues his historic pace. It is worth noting that the rest of the lineup was contained by the Mets’ pitching staff. The team was only 3 for 10 with RISP last night, leaving plenty of opportunities on the table to blow the game open.
Clarke Schmidt takes the mound for the Yankees in game two. He has had an up-and-down year in 2025 so far. In his last start against the Seattle Mariners, he allowed three hits and three unearned runs over six innings, striking out six hitters. Schmidt has struggled with control at times, allowing hitters to get free bases. This is often how he gets himself into trouble.

Prediction
Yesterday, the Yankees spread hit at the plus odds. That didn’t change Vegas’ mind on today’s odds. That leads me to believe the oddsmakers think yesterday was an anomaly for the Mets’ offense, and they favor the Mets in the pitching matchup. I’m inclined to agree. The Yankees only scored six runs yesterday, leaving plenty of opportunities on the table. Canning has been solid this season, and the offense gets going against Schmidt.
