MLB Waiver Wire Top 4 Pitchers August 5th-11th 2024

mlb waiver wire

The MLB is entering the 20th week this week, Aug 5th-11th. If a fantasy team is in need of a pitcher this week, there are still some available off the waiver wire that can help, at least in Yahoo! shallow leagues. The waiver wire is meant to help a team where injuries have occurred, or a player isn’t living up to the projections week to week. These are players that are between 30-50% rostered. This article will go over the top four pitchers to add to a roster if they are already not on a roster.

Top 4 Pitchers on the Waiver Wire for Week 20

Yusei Kikuchi, Houston Astros, is at 49% rostered in some leagues. Kikuchi has started his first game for the Astros last Friday. He pitched well into the 6th inning and had 11 strikeouts. He uses his slider and change-up, which has helped him with his pitching. If he is available, he will be a great pick-up for the weekend on the waiver wire.

Sean Manaea, New York Mets, he is 44% rostered in most leagues. Manaea has seven wins with an ERA of 3.50, WHIP of 1.50 and 112 strikeouts. Manaea started against the Minnesota Twins in his last start and had 11 strikeouts and 23 swinging strikes. He has been great for the month of July.

Hayden Birdsong, San Francisco Giants, he is 34% rostered in leagues. However, Birdsong is a rookie and was down in the Triple A but this was only temporary. Birdsong has two wins with 20 strikeouts in 11 innings. If Birdsong can be grabbed in any league it is highly suggested to take a chance on him and roster him.

Jose Quintana, New York Mets, is 32% rostered in leagues. Quintana has won three out of his four starts and three July wins, 2.05 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts in 30 innings. He is a great backup on rosters and can give points to a team.

Final Thoughts

Entering in the latter stages of the MLB season can be tough when trying to make adjustments to a fantasy roster. Most players are unavailable because they are already on a fantasy team. All of the “good” players are taken. However, injuries happen to star players where adjustment and add/drops need to be addressed, and that is when the waiver wire comes in handy.

These top four pitchers are pitchers that team managers could have had in the beginning or middle of the season, and they dropped them to the waiver wire. Now, these pitchers have come alive and can help a team manager give that extra boost for a team to win this week or even deeper into August to make the playoffs. Utilizing players off the waiver wire can hurt or help a team need to see what is available and which player will be beneficial.
