The baseball season has just begun, but it is never too early to take a look at the top SSs. Here is a breakdown of the top five overall, the next five to keep an eye on, and five that are worth a spot on your roster.
Top Five MLB SSs
- Bobby Witt Jr. (Royals): This position is loaded. Any of the top five players – or even all of them – went in the first round of drafts. Witt leads the pack coming off a 32 home run, 109 RBI, 31 stolen base season.
- Mookie Betts (Dodgers): The superstar only had 450 at-bats last season but hit 19 home runs and drove in 75 runs. He also stole 16 bases. His is also eligible at OF and very soon at 2B.
- Gunnar Henderson (Orioles): He had 37 home runs, 92 RBI, and two stolen bases for a young, strong Baltimore team.
- Francisco Lindor (Mets): Many thought he should have been the MVP instead of Ohtani. He had 33 home runs and 91 RBI and led the Mets’ charge in the second half, boosting them into the playoffs. Now, he bats in front of Juan Soto.
- Elly De La Cruz (Reds): He was a first-round pick in some leagues and a high-round pick in all leagues. The 23-year-old had 25 home runs last year and is projected to be a huge star.
SSs On The Brink
- Trea Turner (Phillies): The 31-year-old had a down year last season, but he is still among the elite players, and the Phillies are loaded. Despite a 62-RBI season, he did have 21 home runs and 19 stolen bases.
- Corey Seager (Rangers): He had 30 home runs and 74 RBI last season. He already has three home runs this season.
- Willy Adames (Giants): He signed a huge free-agent contract with the Giants after driving in 132 runs for the Brewers last season. He also had 32 home runs but, oddly, does not have any so far this season.
- CJ Abrams (Nationals): The 24-year-old had 20 runs and 65 RBIs last season. He also stole 31 bases. He has huge upside.
- Oneill Cruz (Pirates): Another young buddy star. The 26-year-old had 21 home runs, 76 RBI, and stole 22 bases last season.
Who are these guys?
- Anthony Volpe (Yankees): He is only 23 and starting at SS for a powerful team. That alone makes him worth having. Last year, he had 12 home runs, 60 RBI, and 28 stolen bases.
- Tommy Edman (Dodgers): Anyone on the Dodgers is worth filling a roster spot. He is also eligible at 2B and OF. He had only 20 RBI in limited at-bats last season but already has 13 this season.
- Geraldo Perdomo (Diamondbacks): The 25-year-old SS only had 37 RBI last season but already has 13 for a solid Arizona lineup.
- Kristian Campbell (Red Sox): The 22-year-old rookie was a fourth-round pick by Boston in 2023 and has already found himself in the starting lineup. He is also eligible at 2B and OF.
- Dansby Swanson (Cubs): The 31-year-old was a budding star with the Braves just a short time ago but has slowed down with Chicago. Still worth having. He already has 11 RBIs.
Conclusion at SS
The best sleeper at shortstop is Detroit’s Trey Sweeney. His was a surprise MLB roster player out of spring training. The rookie is off to a solid start with seven RBI. These are names to look out for, as the SS position is loaded in the MLB for redraft.
