Dallas Mavericks vs. Memphis Grizzlies Play-In Game Preview, Prediction & Odds | April 18, 2025

Dallas Mavericks, Anthony Davis

The Dallas Mavericks travel to Memphis and take on the Grizzlies at the FedEx Forum. Each team has faced very difficult adversities this season. For one of these teams, the season will end as they battle it out for the 8th seed. The Western Conference side of the Play-in enters its final phase, and this Friday, April 19th, gives us a playoff-level contest with a lot at stake.

Dallas enters the contest with plenty of momentum after posting an impressive 120-106 victory over the host Sacramento Kings on Wednesday. The Golden State Warriors defeated the Grizzlies the day before on Tuesday, 121-116. This loss could impact this game even further, as Ja Morant could have sustained an ankle injury and will be a game-time decision.

Ja Morant Should Play After Missed Practice

\"Memphis

The Memphis Grizzlies have fallen on misfortune again and again in the last leg of their season. Now they need only one more win to advance to the postseason, and they may have to do it without their best player. Grizzlies star point guard Ja Morant missed Thursday’s practice with a right ankle injury. Grizzlies interim head coach Tuomas Iisalo hopes that his ankle will improve before tip-off.

Ja Morant landed on the foot of Golden State’s Buddy Hield with 4:25 left in the third quarter, the same player he was fined for exchanging ‘gun gestures’ with the last time the two teams played. Morant himself seems confident that he will play in Friday’s game, and Iisalo said to the media after Thursday’s practice, \”My feeling with him is he’ll do absolutely everything in order to play.\”

Dallas Playing Well Despite Turbulent Season

Dallas is coming off a dominating victory on Wednesday. They ended the Sacramento Kings’ season in a 120-106 victory. Anthony Davis led the group with 27 points and an overall impressive showing on the court. Davis also had nine rebounds and three blocked shots for the Mavericks. Klay Thompson also had 23 points, scoring from beyond the three-point line five times.

Thompson is looking to wipe away the stench of a concerning performance he had in the play in the round last season. Thompson went scoreless and missed all 10 of his shots in a play-in contest against the Kings in his final appearance for the Golden State Warriors last year. I realize that neither of these two teams is exactly healthy. Still, I think health and just overall vibes point in favor of the Mavs to move on and the Grizzlies to be headed home.

Prediction

I really don’t trust a team that has fired a head coach in the season. Especially right before the playoffs. Not to mention, further evidence goes to show the locker room and overall play of the team haven’t gotten better since the departure of Taylor Jenkins. I think this is the end of the road for Memphis. That should be good news for those who choose to take the underdog Mavs in this one.

Final Pick

Dallas Mavericks to win (+204)
