Before we dive into Matthew Stafford and his 2024 prospects, I want to flashback to 2003 when he was just a Sophomore in High School and faced off against yours truly. I was a Junior middle linebacker and even back then, everyone knew Stafford was destined for greatness.
On one particular play though, I lit him up! Yes sports fans, I blitzed through an open hole and knocked poor Matthew Stafford down. As I lay on top of him on the ground, I heard the crowd roar and knew something special had happened.
So I immediately looked to see if I had caused an interception or a fumble. Turns out Stafford threw a 50-yard touchdown pass over my head. Like it was nothing! That’s the highlight of my playing career but it was just another rep for the Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
Matthew Stafford Could Dominate in 2024
Flash forward to 2024 and Matthew Stafford is still making defenders look foolish. Last season he threw for 3,965 yards and 24 touchdowns and this year he should be even better. Why? Because he’s got two of the top wide receivers in the league on his team in Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. That alone should make life pretty easy for Matthew Stafford.
The offensive line, including last year’s second-round pick Steve Avila, has a lot of potential and they have a great opportunity to improve on last season’s play. At tight end, Tyler Higbee returns to give Stafford a veteran presence who has served as an important safety valve. He may be coming off an injury but Higbee has shown he has value when healthy.
But that’s not all Matthew Stafford has working for him this year. The run game should be very solid as well, with last year’s breakout Kyren Williams and 3rd round pick Blake Corum in the fold. They each bring experience and the right skill set to maximize the Rams’ offensive production.
Kyren rushed for 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns last year in only 12 games played while Corum helped lead Michigan to a college football National Championship. Both runners should take a lot of pressure off of Stafford allowing him the opportunity to cook.
Is Stafford a League Winner?
Matthew Stafford is a three-time Pro Bowler who might now be in the best situation of his career. He’s got everything a quarterback could want and has the trust of his head coach to run the offense. And again, he’s got a lot of help. That’s why this year could be his most productive yet.
Cooper and Puka are both bonafide number-one wide receivers who stretch the field and make the tough catches. Last season they combined for over 2,100 yards receiving and that was with Cooper only playing 12 games. If Kupp can stay healthy then Stafford has a chance to shatter last season’s stats and have the best year of his entire career.
Stafford also had renowned offensive genius Sean McVay as his head coach, giving him another edge. McVay is one of the best head coaches in the league and gives Matthew Stafford a reliable partner when it comes to preparing for opposing defenses.
Final thoughts
Matthew Stafford isn’t going to get you the much-valued rushing yards that quarterbacks like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson deliver. He’s not that kind of quarterback. But despite not having speed, he still has a rocket arm and the ability to make any throw you ask him to.
So when you’re drafting this year, feel free to wait on Quarterback because Stafford is a great value pick later in drafts. He won’t end up as a top 5 QB this year, but he has every opportunity to end up in the top 10. So feel free to pass on the shiny, big names at the top of fantasy drafts and wait until the later rounds to grab Stafford. You’ll be glad you did!
