C. Kershaw (L) vs. G. Canning (R)
Where to Watch: Apple TV+
The Los Angeles Dodgers open up a three-game set against the New York Mets. This is a battle of two of the top teams in the National League. However, both are struggling a bit right now, sitting at 5-5 in their last ten games. The Dodgers took two out of three from the Arizona Diamondbacks in their last series despite only scoring four runs in the last two games. The Mets lost two out of three against the Boston Red Sox in Fenway and have had their own share of offensive issues. Can the Dodgers and Mets get their offenses back on track?

Key Stats
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ offense hasn’t been quite as dominant in the past week. Shohei Ohtani does have two home runs in the past seven games, but is only hitting .269. Mookie Betts has similar stats, but is only hitting .250. First baseman Freddie Freeman has been getting on base, hitting .360 with three doubles in the past seven games, but doesn’t have a home run or an RBI during that span. There is still plenty of pop in this lineup, but they have not been as devastating as they have been in the past.
Left-hander Clayton Kershaw takes the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers. His first start of the year went horribly wrong. In just 4.0 innings pitched, he gave up five hits and five earned runs, while only striking out two batters. Dodgers’ fans used to look at Kershaw’s starts with hope. Now, they hope he can survive and keep the game somewhat close.
New York Mets
The numbers are pretty bad for the New York Mets in the past week in terms of hitting. It isn’t just one person who is struggling. It’s the entire team. Over the past seven games, here are the batting averages for many members of the Mets’ lineup.
Francisco Lindor: .174
Pete Alonso: .167
Brett Baty: .176
Brandon Nimmo: .105
Juan Soto: .150
Yikes. It would be one thing if one of these players was struggling, but they all have hit sub-.200 over the past week. It isn’t surprising to see some games dropped when this is the output from the lineup.
Right-hander Griffin Canning takes the mound for the New York Mets. In his last start against the New York Yankees, he pitched 5.1 innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs, while striking out four. Canning has been very good in the month of May. In three starts, he has pitched 16.1 innings, giving up 15 hits and only four earned runs. The Mets have won the past five games Canning has started.

Prediction
Both of these offenses have been struggling as of late. However, there is a difference between a dip in production and a full-on slump. The Los Angeles Dodgers haven’t been the juggernaut on offense that they have been in the past, but they still have plenty of hitters who have a respectable batting average. The New York Mets have been bad. Very very bad. However, Kershaw’s pitching has been worse. He just doesn’t have it anymore, and if the Mets are going to break out of a slump, this is the pitcher to do it against. Give me the Mets to win the opener at home.
