Kyle Schwarber Fantasy Outlook

Kyle Schwarber

As it looks like the  Philadelphia Phillies could be headed in a better direction after taking two out of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Phillies designated hitter has been swinging the hottest bat of late. While Kyle Schwarber has been the every day designated hitter for the Phillies this season, he has proven to a worthy utility player in fantasy due to his high production of walks and home runs.

Schwarber’s hot streak feels great in the moment. Will it continue for the remainder of the season?

The Phillies power hitter wasn’t putting up the same type of home run numbers that fantasy owners expected, but it looks like the Schwarbarian is finding his form on the plate. Schwarber is on a seven-game hitting streak, which has included five home runs. Four of those came in the last two games of the Dodgers series at Chavez Ravine. In this hitting streak, the fighting leadoff hitters also have compiled ten runs batted in.

Normally, leadoff hitters tend to struggle with production at this level because hitters in the bottom of orders usually aren’t on base a lot for the leadoff hitter. But it finally seems like the Phillies are coming out of their hitting slump, which has allowed more players to be on base for Schwarber. Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm has been in the top 5 in the National League in RBIs all season, but now the power-hitting leadoff man is joining the party.

Streakiness of Schwarber

From a fantasy perspective, the exciting aspect of Schwarber being on a heater is that this can go on for entire months at a time. June has normally been his month, but it seems right as the Phillies needed one of their superstars to step up, Schwarber has been leading that charge. While he doesn’t give any wiggle room for fantasy owners due to being exclusively a designated hitter, the production value is sky-high as the way Schwarber usually produces is through the long ball. The ceiling is more likely too high to pass up as a fantasy owner in need of someone who, on any night, can massively produce.

What also helps the cause is that Schwarber is third in the league with 82 walks this season. New York Yankees outfielders Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, along with Schwarber, are so far ahead of any player in baseball in terms of walks. While Schwarber is near the bottom 16% in the majors in strikeout rate, he makes up for it for walking consistently. While the risk can be high because of a bad strikeout rate, it is a risk worth taking as on any night; he could score more points in one night than one player’s entire week.
