Kevin Durant enters his second season as Phoenix Sun to begin the 2024-2025 NBA season. Last season Durant and the Suns finished with a 49-33 record and number six seed in overall Western Conference standings. Phoenix acquired Durant in February of 2023 in what they hoped was the beginning of their version of the big three after getting Bradley Beal in July of 2023.
Phoenix has the pieces in place to make a run and come out of the Western Conference. Last season they were sixth in point differential and tied for third in road wins in the West. Durant, when healthy, is a match-up nightmare, can get his shot off anywhere on the floor, and is a multi-level scorer.
Kevin Durant 2023-2024 Production
Kevin Durant was fifth in the NBA in scoring at 27.1 points per game and averaged 6.6 rebounds and 5 assists per game. Durant appeared in 75 games last season, his most since the 2018-2019 season. Phoenix are 52-31 record all-time with Durant in the line-up and a .702 winning percentage. To put that in perspective, that win percentage would have been tops in the Western Conference last season. Durant had a 29.0 usage rate last season which nearly matches his career 30.1. Durant was also a volume shooter last season with 19.1 shot attempts per game, second only to Booker’s 19.2.
Kevin Durant 2024-2025 Projections
Pre-season ADP has Durant at consensus ECR overall 17 and an ADP of 14 and SF3 behind only Jayson Tatum and Anthony Edwards. Durant gives you positional flexibility as well with his PF eligibility and PF6 preseason ranking. Durant is projected to play in 71 games, averaging 26.6 points per game, 41.3 fantasy points per game, and 36.6 minutes.
Durant also possesses the key usage rate in basketball, with a career average of 30.1 and he was top 13 last season in that department. The Suns run plays through him ensuring he gets the volume to put up the fantasy offensive output we desire. Phoenix will manage Durant’s minutes and no doubt they can with Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker on the roster.
We want Durant available down the stretch for our fantasy playoff run. We feel his second-round ADP is well worth the risk and pairs up nicely at the end of round one-two turn. There is a potential Devin Booker Phoenix Suns stack or pair him with James Harden, Anthony Edwards, or Donavan Mitchell.
Final Thoughts
Volume is king in fantasy sports and that is what we get with Kevin Durant. Durant possesses the usage rate, volume shot attempts, and ancillary stats to be worth the somewhat risk with his second-round ADP. The only question mark for us with Durant is his age and injury risk entering his 17th season.
However, we saw a glimpse of what he can still do with his performance on Team USA in this year’s Summer Olympics. Durant possesses the skills to be an elite player and possibly outperform his second-round ADP.
