Kenneth Gainwell is entering his fourth season with the Philadelphia Eagles as the backup running back. Eagles fans thought he could get a potential bump in production after the 2022 playoff run, especially the game against New York, but last year he still was a backup. Now in 2024, he will be the backup once again with even fewer opportunities especially if the Eagles use Saquon Barkley as a three-down back. In 2023, Kenneth Gainwell had 84 carries for 364 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also grabbing 30 receptions for 183 yards. Gainwell had pedestrian numbers like most RB2s have on a lot of teams, but Gainwell does have some highlight moments in his career where it could be dangerous for future fantasy owners to take a look at him, however in 2023 the lack of touchdowns would be concerning for 2024 if they consider him as a legit option.

ESPN is projecting Kenneth Gainwell to have 61 carries for 266 yards and 2 touchdowns while also grabbing 20 receptions for 139 yards for a total of 74.34 fantasy points for an RB65 ranking in 2024. This is along the lines that most fans are thinking for Gainwell, especially Eagles fans who have seen Gainwell’s game up close and personally these last three seasons. Gainwell’s production could grow especially if Barkley gets injured in 2024.
Meanwhile, Fantasy Pros has Kenneth Gainwell projected as the RB63 in their ECR ratings with the Eagles having the 9th easiest running back strength of schedule in 2024, with the following stat line projections 62 carries 246 yards, and 2 rushing touchdowns. Gainwell projections on both platforms are similar in line enough to look at both of them with equal value in regards to Gainwell.
Final Thoughts
Kenneth Gainwell is only to be used in case of emergencies for your rosters, Gainwell can get you a win here and there if he has the opportunities because of the 2022 playoffs but the opportunities won’t be consistent enough in 2024 to earn him a draft spot.
Only pick him up in waivers if Barkley isn’t playing and you need an emergency running back for that week. Gainwell can bring a few highlight plays but also could lose his RB2 spot on the team his production continues to lack because Will Shipley has impressed so far in the preseason for the Eagles.
