Kawhi Leonard is entering the 2024-25 season as the solo option on the Clippers after the departure of Paul George in the offseason in free agency. Kawhi Leonard has dealt with many injuries throughout his career, especially knee and leg injuries. When it comes to when he’s on the court, Leonard can be an asset to fantasy teams because of his defense and ability to score consistently, but the main issue is availability. It’s like they say the best ability is availability. With that being said let’s look at The Claw’s 2023-24 production.
Kawhi Leonard 2023-24 Production
Kawhi Leonard averaged 23.7 points per game, 6.1 rebounds per game, 3.6 assists per game, and 1.6 steals per game while playing 68 games in the 2023-24 season. Leonard did injure his knee in the first round of the playoffs against the Mavericks, which kept him from playing in Paris. Leonard had a strong production last season leading him to an All-Star selection once again.
Leonard was going to have the Derrick White role for the Olympics before the Clippers and Team USA combined to decide to hold him out of the Olympics but now some recent news will affect his 2024-25 projections for fantasy purposes. Speaking of the projections let’s look at Kawhi Leonard’s projections.
Kawhi Leonard 2024-25 Projections
As previously stated, Leonard had all summer to rest up and heal his knee, but as of October 17th, The Claw is going to miss the start of the season with knee inflammation according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, which will cause a huge dip in his production and projections that ESPN is giving him which was ranked 88th even with the injury.
ESPN had the following stat line projection for Leonard: 23.2 points per game, 6.1 rebounds per game, 3.6 assists per game, and 1.5 steals per game. ESPN also has projected him to play 50 games but with the uncertainty of the news from earlier this week, don’t expect it. The amount of information feels similar to the Quad injury he dealt with in San Antonio before he was traded to the Raptors.
Kawhi Leonard is a great player when healthy and can make an impact on the court that not many players can do on both sides of the court. Leonard had to step up in a bigger role with the departure of Paul George to Philly but now the impact of Kawhi unfortunately won’t help your redraft leagues or the Clippers at the start of the season and there is no timeline for his return according to Tyron Lue.
Final Thoughts
Kawhi Leonard before the news was a liability in fantasy anyway because of the times he missed games because of health reasons. Now it’s a definite avoid in the redraft format because you need dependability and availability to make huge strides in the redraft format, but when Leonard is back on the court, the DFS scene is a good opportunity to use Leonard to make some money when he’s playing because of his skill set.
